Sometimes it’s tough to know when it’s time to replace your car because letting go is tough After all, we end up spending a lot of time and money on our vehicles, and we create some of our most fun memories in them too. Here are five signs that it’s time to replace your car. Even so, the art of life is knowing when to let go.

Your car is a money pit

Keeping up with routine maintenance on your car is extremely important since it ultimately prolongs your car’s life. But as a vehicle gets older, regular maintenance and additional repairs costs can get pretty expensive. At first, the additional repairs on an older car don’t seem to cost that much. But the more you drive your vehicle, the more likely you will run into issues. At some point, you will find a new problem every month which can consume your extra time and money.

If repairs start to cost more than your car is worth, it’s time to let it go. The extra maintenance on a vehicle can also equal a monthly car note sooner than you think. It may be hard to let go of your beloved car at first, but you have to admit that you need a more reliable vehicle than what you have.

Your car has too many quirks

Older vehicles indeed offer plenty of charm, but sometimes they end up having too many quirks that compromise your safety. We’re talking about things like when your left rear door no longer opens from the inside, or when your headlights don’t come on properly. Or if your car won’t even start when you attempt to turn it regularly, it’s time to let it go.

Your friends and family are getting concerned

This sign relates to the last two. If your loved ones are noticeably concerned about the unexpected maintenance issues and growing mishaps on your car, it’s time to get a new one. You’ll know this to be true if they often make excuses not to ride with you or are genuinely surprised by how you can get around in your car.

Your car struggles to pass an emission test

U.S. vehicle emissions tests have become stricter over the last few years. Because of this, it may be harder for some older cars to pass these emissions tests. If your vehicle fails an emissions test, the DMV will not register your vehicle, and you will be required to repair your car so that it passes the next time. These rules and regulations vary by state, but things can get costly in this situation fast.

Your lifestyle has changed

If your vehicle no longer matches your lifestyle, it’s time to get a new one. Maybe you have a longer commute, and the Dodge Challenger you bought no longer makes sense. Or perhaps the car you purchased for your city life doesn’t accommodate your growing family. No matter the instance, if you find yourself working too hard to keep it, it’s time to replace your car.
