When Consumer Reports weighs in with data and survey responses to compile a best-of list, car buyers take notice. If you’re interested in midsize SUVs, there is one list you have to see. CR sifted through the ownership experience analytics and put together the five most reliable midsized SUVs in the used vehicle segment. Based on high-reliability scores, CR road testing evaluations, and owner satisfaction ratings, these five SUVs are some of the most reliable rides. Buying one of these not-quite-new SUV models at three years old will be a smart move, especially if reliability matters most to you.
1. 2019 Acura MDX
Consumer Reports starts this most reliable midsized SUV list with the 2019 Acura MDX. Pricing ranges between $35,775 and $44,450, which is a bit steep but well worth it. The owner reported mpg hovers around 22. The three-row SUV comes with the 3.5-liter V6 engine and offers plenty of luxury touchpoints. It’s a “pleasant highway cruiser” with comfortable seats and a dual-screen infotainment system. Handling isn’t the sharpest, and some of the more innovative tech, like the surround-camera view, is only available at the highest, Advance package.
2. 2019 Hyundai Santa Fe
Next up on the most reliable list is the 2019 Hyundai Santa Fe. The five-passenger SUV earns high marks among owners with its price range of $24,450 to $34,850 and available engine selections with either the 2.4-liter four-cylinder or the 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder. Overall mpg is rated at 24 among vehicle owners and 21 in CR testing. You’ll love the comfortable seats and spacious cabin. Additionally, many of the safety driver aids, including forward-collision warning, blind-spot warning, and auto-emergency braking, come standard. Power delivery may feel “uneven” during takeoff. Still, overall, there’s plenty to love about the Santa Fe’s responsive steering and handling.
3. 2019 Mazda CX-9
You can’t have a most reliable list of midsized SUVs without the Mazda CX-9. Consumers love the stylish third-row SUV, in part because of its affordability. You can buy a 2019 for $27,625 to $37,800. Every CX-9 gets a super-responsive 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder powerhouse, earning “an impressive 22 mpg.” Driving the CX-9 is fun, comfortable, and quiet. High-end trims feel downright luxurious. It is a tighter feeling cockpit, and the infotainment controls might take some additional time to learn. Still, the 2019 Mazda CX-9 is a reputable choice.
4. 2019 Nissan Murano
If you find a 2019 Nissan Murano for sale, it’s worth a look. As a CR recommended entry on this list of most reliable SUVs, the Murano is all style and interior luxury. You can expect to pay $26,775 to $34,875 for one of these gems, earning about 23 mpg. Enjoy a “punchy yet refined” 3.5-liter six-cylinder engine, a quiet cabin, and all the upscale feels. There are plenty of standard features, with nice upgrade options, as well. However, the ride isn’t quite as smooth with the 20-inch wheels as it is with the standard 18-inch options.
5. 2019 Subaru Outback
Reliable might be the Subaru Outback’s middle name. Subaru is known for producing long-lasting, reliable, and capable rides. So, it’s no surprise that the 2019 Outback earns a top spot on this Consumer Reports reliability list. For a midsized SUV, paying $25,250 to $35,550 and earning 26 mpg are welcomed value propositions. The Outback comes with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine but is also available with a 3.6R variation. Owners love the increased visibility and robust list of standard safety equipment, like the backup camera, as part of the EyeSight suite of driver aids. It’s not as punchy, fun to drive, or upscale as some of the other contenders in this segment, but the 2019 Subaru Outback is always worth a test drive.
If you’re keeping an eye out for a used, midsized SUV, keep this Consumer Reports list in mind. These SUVs are among the most reliable on the market.
