5-Car Pileup Leaves One Dead as Los Angeles 10 Freeway Turns Into a Parking Lot

Los Angeles highways are a different beast known for their huge amounts of traffic, but the early hours of a Sunday morning are usually the one time drivers can find some open pavement. Unfortunately, that brief window of calm was shattered this weekend by a five-car collision that claimed a life and brought interstate traffic to a grinding halt.

The incident took place just minutes before 5:00 a.m. on Sunday, March 29. For reasons that are still under investigation, a massive collision involving five separate vehicles tore through the eastbound side of the 10 Freeway, right near the Crenshaw Boulevard exit.

When emergency crews from the Los Angeles Fire Department and state law enforcement reached the mangled vehicles, first responders were unable to save one of the motorists. A 30-year-old man succumbed to his injuries before he could be moved from the wreckage.

Rescue teams worked quickly to pull three other victims from the surrounding cars. The survivors, identified as three men ranging in age from 24 to 32, were rushed to a nearby medical center. Medical staff have currently labelled them as stable.

Clearing the aftermath of a wreck this severe is a painstaking process. The debris reportedly stretched across the majority of the roadway, meaning authorities had no choice but to block off four eastbound lanes to protect the first responders and allow officials to document any evidence.

The massive closure severely bottlenecked early morning travellers, transforming the 10 Freeway into a parking lot for over four hours. It took until roughly 9:30 a.m. for crews to finally sweep the tarmac clean, tow the destroyed vehicles, and get the traffic flowing normally again.

Now, officials are figuring out exactly what triggered the pileup. The California Highway Patrol has taken the lead on the case, analyzing the crash site to determine what factors caused the incident, whether it was speed, impairment, or a mechanical failure.
