5 best used three-row SUVs for families

These options are based on three-row SUVs with top safety ratings from the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Plus, the picks are paired with a high-quality and reliability rating from J.D.Power.

1. 2021 Chevrolet Traverse – $19,000

The first used three-row SUV to consider is the 2021 Chevrolet Traverse. According to J.D.Power, it has a reliability rating of 87 out of 100, which is great.

That’s an above-average, extremely high score. Plus, the Chevy Traverse is an IIHS Top Safety Pick and earned five stars from the NHTSA.

Critics like this SUV because it’s spacious and comfortable, with a large third row. Six adult passengers can comfortably fit. The potent 3.6-liter engine provides 310 hp and 266 lb-ft of torque. It can tow up to 5,000 lbs.

Drawbacks include that the cabin can feel a bit unrefined due to the use of hard plastics, and the design isn’t very aesthetically pleasing to critics. Also, the ride quality is a bit rough, and standard safety features are reserved for higher trim levels.

    2. 2022 Honda Pilot – $22,000

The 2022 Honda Pilot has a reliability rating of 78 out of 100. That’s an average score, which shouldn’t be too concerning. It’s not a Top Safety Pick, but it earned a 5-star rating from the NHTSA.

It’s favored for having a smooth ride, responsive steering, and plenty of space. It has a 3.5-liter V6 engine with 280 hp and 262 lb-ft of torque. This SUV can tow up to 5,000 lbs.

You’ll find that it has an abundance of passenger and cargo space with easy access to the third row. Plus, it has a ton of standard features to enjoy, such as an 8.0-inch infotainment screen.

However, the interior might be a bit underwhelming. Critics refer to it as feeling outdated, especially when it comes to the tech.

      3. 2022 Hyundai Palisade – $24,500

The 2022 Hyundai Palisade rings in with a reliability rating of 74 out of 100. This is average, but still nothing to worry about. It is an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ winner and has a five-star rating from the NHTSA.

The standard 3.8-liter V6 engine cranks out 291 hp and 262 lb-ft of torque. This SUV can tow up to 5,000 lbs, just like its rivals.

Critics enjoy the Hyundai Palisade because it’s powerful and refined for an engaging driving experience. Plus, it’s one of the more comfortable used three-row SUVs with a smooth ride and quiet interior.

It has tons of standard features to provide extra value. However, the tech layout is a bit dated, and the third row is somewhat cramped compared to competitors.

        4. 2022 Toyota Highlander – $23,500

The 2022 Toyota Highlander has a reliability rating of 82 out of 100. This is great and above-average. Plus, it is an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ winner with a five-star score from the NHTSA.

The Highlander features a standard 3.5-liter V6 engine with 295 hp, and an available hybrid powertrain provides 243 hp. This SUV can tow up to 5,000 lbs, and the hybrid can tow up to 3,500 lbs.

Critics praise the Highlander for being efficient, providing tons of cargo space, and having tons of standard safety features.

However, it’s not the most athletic option on this list. Also, the third row is limited to smaller children. At 5’1”, it’s difficult for me to fit back there.

          5. 2022 Subaru Ascent – $21,500

The 2022 Subaru Ascent has a reliability rating of 76 out of 100. It’s only three points away from having an above-average score. Plus, it’s another IIHS Top Safety Pick+ option with a five-star rating from the NHTSA.

It has a 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 260 hp and 277 lb-ft of torque. Like the other used three-row SUVs on this list, it can tow up to 5,000 lbs.

Critics admire the Subaru Ascent for being athletic with above-average off-roading capabilities. Plus, its pretty spacious and configurable with adjustable second row seats.

However, it has a bland interior that isn’t the most comfortable. The Ascent also has a third row that’s reserved for the shortest passengers.
