Nothing matches a coupe for style and performance. The combination of sleek lines and powerful engines stands out among boxy sedans and SUVs. Yet coupes can also be practical, offering room for riders or cargo. Pricey premium options abound, but so do many models under $20,000. At that price point, you can find coupes like the Audi TT, BMW 2 Series and 3 Series, Cadillac CTS, and Ford Mustang GT. According to Autotrader, the five best used coupes under $20,000 offer unique features while providing plenty of value for the money.

2011 Ford Mustang GT

Few vehicles are as iconic as the original pony car. Galloping off the production line in 1965, the Ford Mustang offered 2+2 seating and optional V8 performance for little money. Today, this muscle car offers the same virtues in an even better package.

You can find plenty of used models for under $20,000. But if you want a V8, the 2011 Ford Mustang GT is a superb option. It combines a classic throwback style with a robust rumble courtesy of a 412-hp 5.0-liter V8.

2014 Cadillac CTS Coupe

Best used coupes: 2014 Cadillac CTS Coupe
2014 Cadillac CTS Coupe | Cadillac

Cadillac produced a coupe version of its CTS midsize luxury car. Like the sedan, the two-door model boasts chiseled good looks and abundant amenities and performance features.

V8 models start well above $20,000, but plenty of 2014 Cadillac CTS Coupes with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder or 3.6-liter V6 offer solid performance. The best of the bunch is the 3.6 Premium with optional all-wheel drive.

2013 BMW 3 Series

The BMW 3 Series is a paragon of premium coupes. However, the 2013 model is the last true two-door 3 Series BMW offered before rebranding it as the 4 Series.

In any case, the last BMW 3 Series coupe offers plenty in this price range. A turbocharged inline-six harnessing 320 hp gives this sports car under $20K admirable levels of performance and handling. But it’s also surprisingly practical and economical, offering up to 30 mpg on the highway and comfortable seating for four.

2014 BMW 2 Series

If you want a less expensive 3 Series, you don’t have to look far. The 2014 BMW 2 Series offers everything the 3 Series does but in a slightly smaller, cheaper package. And because the 2 Series is more affordable, you can find the high-performance M Sport models, including the M235i, for under $20,000.

2012 Audi TT

The Audi TT is one of the most distinctive coupes on the market. But it’s more than just a pretty face. With Quattro all-wheel drive and a selection of powerful four-cylinder engines, this used coupe packs impressive performance.

The low roofline compromises an already cramped back seat, but the 2012 Audi TT offers generous cargo space, making it a practical sports car under $20K for two people.

Which is the best used coupe to buy?

The top five coupes on Autotrader’s list offer an array of choices. Each provides a blend of style and performance but in a different way. The BMW 2 Series and 3 Series boast the best mix of performance and practicality. Add to that BMWs precise handling and almost perfect ride, and either model is tough to beat.

For style points, it’s hard to go wrong with the Audi TT or Cadillac CTS coupe. The Caddy’s design isn’t for everyone, but it’s distinctive. It’s also the most luxurious of the bunch while offering impressive performance.

Likewise, the Audi TT’s styling might not be to everyone’s taste, but it stands out in a crowded parking lot. Add to that Audi’s Quattro AWD and hatchback practicality, and the TT is ideal for all-weather driving.

And for old-school muscle, nothing touches the Mustang. It offers a combination of V8 thunder, classic looks, and performance that no other car on this list delivers.
