With gas prices at all-time highs, it might be time to trade in your vehicle for something more efficient. Unfortunately, new EVs aren’t for everyone and can be costly upfront. So instead, consider a used car, specifically a used hybrid. Not only will a hybrid vehicle get you where you need to go, but you’ll also save money at the pump. And if you aren’t sure which model to buy, Autotrader provides a list of some of the best used cars that get 40 mpg.

All models on the list have an EPA-estimated combined fuel economy rating of at least 40 mpg. Even more impressive, some even surpass the 50-mpg mark. Take a look at the top five models in Autotrader’s “10 Best Used Cars That Get 40 MPG.”

Although Chevrolet discontinued the Volt, many are still available on the used market. And according to Autotrader, the Volt is one of the best used cars getting at least 40 mpg.

It has a 101-hp 1.5-liter gas engine and a pair of electric motors. This plug-in hybrid achieves an all-electric range of 53 miles. When the gas engine kicks in, it gets a combined 42 mpg.

The cabin is well-equipped. Features include 60/40-split folding rear seatbacks, a leather-wrapped tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, and automatic climate control.

2. 2013–2018 Ford C-Max Hybrid

The Ford C-Max is a hybrid hatchback based on the Focus. It packs a 2.0-liter Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder engine, an electric motor, and a gearless continuously variable transmission.

Thanks to its hybrid powertrain, it’s more efficient in the city than on the highway, getting 42 in the city and 38 highway for a combined 40 mpg. It’s no wonder the C-Max Hybrid landed a spot on Autotrader’s list of the best used cars that get 40 mpg.

But don’t let its size fool you — this hatchback provides plenty of space. SE trims come standard with dual-zone climate control, a rearview camera, and Ford’s Sync infotainment system with a 4.2-inch center display.

3. 2018–2020 Honda Accord Hybrid

The Honda Accord Hybrid is probably your best option if you need a spacious yet fuel-efficient sedan. It achieves 47 mpg in the city and on the highway thanks to its 181-hp 2.0-liter four-cylinder gas engine and electric motor powered by a lithium-ion battery.

Standard features include a multi-angle rearview camera with dynamic guidelines, a 7.0-inch infotainment display, Bluetooth connectivity, and the Honda Sensing suite of advanced safety features.

4. 2017–2019 Hyundai Ioniq

If you like the Toyota Prius, you’ll enjoy the Hyundai Ioniq. This compact car gets excellent fuel economy ratings of up to 57 mpg in the city and 59 mpg on the highway for a combined 58 mpg, landing the Ioniq on AutoTrader’s list of the best used cars that get 40 mpg.

As for what’s under the hood: Ioniq Hybrid models come with a 104-hp 1.6-liter Atkinson cycle inline-four engine.

This model also has impressive standard features. They include a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, hill-start assist, and seven airbags.

5. 2017–2019 Kia Niro

The Kia Niro offers the best of both worlds — hatchback zippiness and crossover utility. Whichever trim you buy, the Niro gets between 50 mpg and 43 mpg combined. The standard engine is a 1.6-liter four-cylinder, paired with a 43-hp tractive motor located between the engine and transmission.

Niro LX models offer upgraded features. They include keyless entry, push-button start, UVO3 infotainment with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration, and Bluetooth connectivity.

What are the benefits of buying a fuel-efficient used car?

There are many perks to purchasing a fuel-efficient used car. First and foremost, you’ll save on fuel costs and the time it takes to fill your vehicle.

And thanks to their efficiency, these vehicles reduce smog-contributing pollution, especially if you opt for a hybrid.

And the fact that new cars depreciate when you drive off the lot is another reason to choose a used car.
