A German court just delivered justices relating to a case that’s roughly 10 years old. Four previous Volkswagen executives have been convicted for their part in the diesel scandal.
You may recall, the ‘dieselgate’, which occurred in September 2015. This is when VW admitted to tampering with millions as diesel vehicles to trick pollution tests. They were cheating emissions with cars and SUVs.
These four managers have been on trial since 2021. Former VW executive Heinz-Jacob Neusser for a suspended jail term of one year and three months. The Head of Drive Electronics, Hanno J., got slapped with two years and seven months in jail.
The former head of Diesel Motor Development, Jens J., got the heaviest sentence of four years and six months. According to Fortune, a fourth defendant was sentenced to one year and 10 months.
Audi CEO Rupert Stadler is the highest-ranking former executive to receive a conviction. In February, France called for Volkswagen to face charges of aggravated fraud as well.
Reportedly, over one million French drivers had to pay to service and repair their cars after the emissions breach was revealed. Cars that were impacted include the Jetta, Jetta Sportaswagen, Beetle, Audi A3, Gold, Gold Sportwagen, and Passat.
VW intentionally programmed diesel engines to only activate emissions controls during lab emissions testing. This made it look like their vehicles meet US standards. But they were really emitted 40 times more emissions while driving.
