One of the most famous hybrid models on the automotive market is the Toyota Prius. Its brand, Toyota, is known for building reliable vehicles, so it’s no wonder people gravitate to the car that offers the best fuel efficiency and durability. However, drivers may want a little more in their hybrid. You could choose the Toyota Camry Hybrid, but there are other alternatives to check out that aren’t a Camry. Here are four models that are suitable as a Prius substitute.

1. Honda Accord Hybrid

With the Honda Accord Hybrid, you get a front-wheel drivetrain but no all-wheel drive option like you do with the redesigned Toyota Prius model, according to Edmunds. However, it does have the same 2.0-liter gasoline engine paired with an electric motor, which offers slightly more horsepower (204 hp) than Toyota’s Hybrid version (196 hp). However, you’ll get a two-electric motor setup with the Prius AWD model. Still, the Accord Hybrids powertrain does have more torque (247 lb-ft) than the Prius (139 lb-ft).

Cargo space with the Honda Accord Hybrid falls a bit short when compared to the 2023 Toyota Prius, offering only 16.7 cubic feet of storage. With the Toyota, you can get up to 23.8 cubic feet of space, aided by the hatchback design. The interior room isn’t bad, with an overall measurement of 102.8 cubic feet, giving plenty of space for five passengers. Still, the Prius offers a bit more, with 115 cubic feet of room.

The Honda Accord Hybrid is priced at $31,895 to start, around $3,000 more than the Prius, but it’s still a good alternative to check out.

2. Hyundai Elantra Hybrid

For those wanting the gas mileage benefits of a hybrid vehicle but want to save as much money as possible on their purchase, the 2023 Hyundai Elantra Hybrid is a good choice. This model comes with a price tag of $24,550 to start, which will get you a 1.6-liter Inline-four engine paired with an electric motor producing 139 hp and 195 lb-ft of torque. Like others on this list, it will only come with front-wheel-drive, though.

Regarding roominess, you won’t get as much trunk space. With 14.2 cubic feet of storage, it comes in about 9 cubic feet less than the Toyota Prius. However, there’s plenty of room for five passengers to sit comfortably inside the cabin area. Hyundai’s warranty on the hybrid components is a major plus since you get a 10-year/100,000-mile warranty, which is two years more than the Prius.

3. Hyundai Sonata Hybrid

For a starting price of $28,250, the 2023 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid becomes a pretty close alternative to the Toyota Prius ($28,850). The Sonata midsize sedan offers a 2.0-liter Inline-four engine paired with an electric motor, producing 192 hp and 271 lb-ft of torque. You’ll also get around 50 mpg on city roads and 54 mpg when traveling on the highway. The Prius is similar, with just 3 mpg more in the city and 2 mpg more on the highway.

With the Hyundai Sonata, you get up to 16 cubic feet of cargo space, which is close to what Toyota offers in its hybrid model. As for the cabin area, this model gives you 120.4 cubic feet of room, a little more than what you get with the Prius, which offers 5 cubic feet less. Hyundai’s Sonata is a midsize sedan, whereas the Prius is a compact hatchback, so if you’re looking for a bit more head and legroom, the Sonata will give you what you want.

4. Toyota Corolla Hybrid

The least expensive hybrid model on this list of Toyota Prius alternatives is the 2023 Toyota Corolla Hybrid. While it starts at $22,800, you won’t get quite as powerful of a motor setup as you would with the Prius. Powering it up is a 1.8-liter Inline-four engine paired with an electric motor, which generates 134 hp and 156 lb-ft of torque. Front-wheel-drive is standard on the Corolla Hybrid model, but you can purchase an all-wheel drive version for approximately $1,400 more.

The Corolla Hybrid also has the lowest amount of cargo space on this list. You only get around 13.1 cubic feet of storage, about 10 cubic feet smaller than you can get with the Prius model. The inside only has about 101 cubic feet of space for its five passengers, but it is designed to be a compact car, after all.

Having a Toyota Prius is a good choice, to be sure, but if you want something more, why not check out the best alternatives on the market that aren’t a Camry? Try out the Honda Accord Hybrid, Hyundai Elantra Hybrid, Hyundai Sonata Hybrid, or Toyota Corolla Hybrid models.
