GMC Hummer EV trucks are now starting to show up on the streets. If you haven’t seen one, get ready, because the truck looks huge. The two-row SUV version will be slightly shorter but just as wide as GMC’s other beast from Factory ZERO in Detroit. GMC has released some specs on the new 2024 GMC Hummer EV SUV, and we can expect it to look similar and have similar capabilities. But, there are still a few reasons to wait to buy the new 2024 Hummer EV SUV.

The 2024 Hummer EV SUV is made for off-roading

Off-roading is key to the Hummer brand, and GM is sure that most of us remember the original H1 trucks and SUVs on CNN during the original Iraq war. But the new  SUV will have trail mapping tech built in, as well as Extract Mode

GMC says it will have best-in-class off-road proportions. But, honestly, what else in the super large, super luxury, off-road electric SUV class? The new Mercedes EQG is about it.

It should be more maneuverable

The 2024 Hummer EV SUV has a nine-inch shorter wheelbase than the Hummer EV truck. That alone will make it easier to park. But it will also have four-wheel steering, which means the CrabWalk function, and that should make it a breeze to parallel park this giant SUV. Also, the CrabWalk feature is super useful in the dirt or on the trail when you need to thread a canyon. GMC says that it will have a turning circle of 35.4 feet, which is pretty impressive considering that a 2022 Toyota 4Runner needs 37.4 feet.

As we mentioned, the new SUV will be smaller than the Hummer EV truck. That smaller size will pay dividends not just in parking lots but off-road, too. It’s about 10 inches shorter than the truck version, but the same width. It has nearly the same overhang and approach angles, but far better departure and break-over angles than the truck.

Even though the Hummer EV SUV doesn’t have the length of the truck, it may be slightly more useful because the rear seats fold flat and allow you to pack in more stuff inside the SUV instead of in the bed.

The 2024 Hummer will have even more tech

The Hummer SUV will be insanely customizable through the My Mode, which allows you to set steering, suspension, sound, and even acceleration of the SUV. The trail mapping software shows not just trails, but nearby chargers. It’s all tied into the new 13.4-inch infotainment screen and the 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster. Also, up to 14 cameras are all over the SUV, but if you add the UltraVision package, you get up to 17 camera views that include underbody cameras so you can protect the batteries from sharp trial rocks.

And, of course, it will have Watts to Freedom, or WTF, mode.

The Disturbing Reason Why Hummer Failed

GMC has not released the full specs. But, we do know that the starting MSRP for the SUV is $90,000, and the 3X (three-motor) was just shy of $100,000, however, new reservations clock in at $106,000 after a price hike, according to InsideEVs. The price you signed up for is the price you’ll pay, GM says, for a new 2024 GMC Hummer EV. Other EV manufacturers saw their social stock decrease (we’re looking at you, Rivian) when they increased the prices of their EVs after taking reservations.
