Nissan redesigned the new for 2022 Nissan Pathfinder with a design that harks back to the model’s classic off-road rugged good looks. But it’s an often-forgotten about SUV when compared to other three-row SUVs like the Hyundai Palisade, Kia Telluride, the Toyota Highlander, and the Honda Pilot. After 35 years of making Pathfinders, Nissan is still working on the same formula of making a tough SUV that looks like an off-road explorer. The 2022 Nissan Pathfinder has a lot going for it.

The 2022 Nissan Pathfinder comes in four different trim levels, and each can be ordered with two- or four-wheel drive. The base S version starts at $34, 640. The SV version adds premium paint, the premium package, extra lighting, roof bars, and an optional tow delete package. It starts at $37,460. The SL starts at $40,540 and adds a two-tone roof, the SL premium package that adds leather, and some more goodies like ProPILOT Assist, NissanConnect, and a 360-degree camera. The Platinum is the top Pathfinder. It starts at $47,140 and gets pretty much every option, as well as special black paint.

Nissan Pathfinders come with a 284-horsepower 3.5-liter V6. The four-wheel-drive package is an extra $1,900 for any trim, and it also adds a terrain mode selector. There is no hybrid version.

The 2022 Pathfinder comes standard with seating for eight. The Pathfinder also has taken some cues from (gasp!) minivans and added a no-tools-required removable center console, as well as one-touch seating in the second row that allows easier access to the third row. Nissan’s design brief included cargo capacity for four golf bags, or a 120-quart cooler, in the back with the three rows up. It also has a luggage box in the cargo floor that adds an additional 54.1 liters of storage.

In the SL, SV, and Platinum versions you can order two captain’s chairs for the second row. Depending on trim levels, seats come in woven cloth, leather, or semi-aniline leather. Back seat passengers can also select their own temps with a tri-zone temperature control system, and even the back seats can be heated.

Is the Nissan Pathfinder good off-road?

The Nissan Pathfinder may have been redesigned for 2022, but it rides on the same platform as the previous generation. The previous Pathfinder’s styling screamed “soft roader,” and the new one harks back to the tough Pathfinder of yore. The differences are more than skin deep. It uses Nissan’s venerable 3.5 liter V6 that it uses in the Altima and other vehicles, but instead of the droning CVT of the previous generation, the new one has a proper nine-speed automatic.

When it comes to driving off-road, the Pathfinder does have some goodies, but it doesn’t have a low-speed transfer case. Instead, the four-wheel-drive versions have selectable terrain modes. It does have a direct-drive mode that helps improve response off-road. But the Pathfinder is built on a unibody platform, not a truck. If your off-roading includes really-rough stuff, we’d suggest staying away from the Pathfinder and instead consider a Frontier Pro4X truck.
