The Toyota Tacoma has been and continues to be the most popular midsize truck in the market. For 2022, the Nissan Frontier is brand new. Has the Frontier made enough strides forward to make it better than the Tacoma? By reputation alone, you wouldn’t think so, but let’s take a look at some hard facts.

1. Power delivery for the 2022 Toyota Tacoma and Nissan Frontier

The latest version of the Frontier is the most powerful midsize truck in the market. U. S. News and World Report tells us this truck uses a strong 3.8-liter V6 paired to a nine-speed automatic transmission. This powertrain brings you 310 horsepower and 281 lb-ft of torque. You can have this truck in either RWD or 4WD to achieve the desired capabilities.

Toyota offers a pair of powertrains for the Tacoma. You’ll choose either a 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine or a 3.5-liter V6. The four-cylinder gives you 159 horsepower and 180 lb-ft of torque, while the V6 has 278 horsepower and 265 lb-ft of torque. Most models use a six-speed automatic transmission, but some V6 4WD models have a six-speed manual.

2. Towing, payload, and fuel economy of these midsize trucks

Based on the powertrains, you would think the Toyota is less capable, but the Tacoma can haul up to 6,800 pounds with a maximum payload of 1,685 pounds. The midsize Nissan Frontier pickup truck can tow 6,720 pounds and carry up to 1,610 pounds in the bed.

Strangely, the Toyota Tacoma offers better fuel mileage at 21 mpg combined. The Frontier gives you 20 mpg with RWD and 19 mpg when you have the 4WD version. You would think a truck with fewer gears wouldn’t have better fuel mileage, but that’s the case with these two.

3. The starting price of the Frontier is higher than the Tacoma

The 2022 Nissan Frontier starts at $29,105 and reaches up to a maximum of nearly $45,000 for the Frontier Pro-4X midsize off-road truck. The 2022 Toyota Tacoma begins at $27,715 and ranges to $48,000 for the TRD Pro model.

4. The connectivity and safety of the Toyota Tacoma are better than the Nissan Frontier

The new 2022 Frontier midsize pickup offers an 8 or 9-inch touchscreen and the connectivity you desire. Similar to what’s found with many Nissan models, you’ll find a strong package of impressive safety features.

Looking at the Tacoma, you find a midsize truck with a touchscreen that maxes out at 8-inches but has the same connectivity items. There are several safety items for the Toyota midsize tuck as well.

The difference between these two trucks is the Toyota comes equipped with more standard safety features than the Nissan. This means you’ll get more from the Tacoma and pay less.

According to Cars Direct, the standard safety features of the 2022 Toyota Tacoma are:

  • Lane departure warning
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Pedestrian detection
  • Forward collision warning
  • Automatic emergency braking
  • Automatic high-beam headlights
