The first-ever Toyota Corolla Cross aims to make big waves by tapping into the success of the best-selling Corolla compact car and the immense popularity of compact crossover SUVs. However, it faces fierce competition from other crossover SUVs, including the Hyundai Tucson. Here are four reasons to buy a 2022 Hyundai Tucson, not a 2022 Toyota Corolla Cross.

2022 Hyundai Tucson delivers better performance than the 2022 Toyota Corolla Cross

The first reason to buy a 2022 Hyundai Tucson instead of a 2022 Toyota Corolla Cross is the Tucson delivers better performance than the Corolla Cross. The Tucson offers three engine options, and they are all more powerful than the 169-hp 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine for the Corolla Cross. This includes a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine (187 hp), a hybrid (226 hp), and a plug-in hybrid (261 hp).

The more powerful engines in the Tucson translate to quicker acceleration. Here are the 0-60 mph times for the Tucson and the Corolla Cross:

  • Gas-powered Tucson: 8.8 seconds
  • Tucson Hybrid: 8.0 seconds
  • Tucson Plug-In Hybrid (PHEV): 7.1 seconds
  • Corolla Cross: 9.2 seconds

Unlike the 2022 Corolla Cross, the 2022 Tucson offers hybrid models

The second reason to buy a 2022 Hyundai Tucson instead of a 2022 Toyota Corolla Cross is that, unlike the Corolla Cross, the Tucson offers hybrid models. As noted earlier, the Tucson offers a standard hybrid model and a plug-in hybrid model.

The most significant benefit of a hybrid is efficiency. While the Corolla Cross gets higher fuel economy than the gas-powered Tucson (32 vs. 29 combined mpg), the hybrid versions of the Tucson get significantly higher gas mileage. The Tucson Hybrid has an estimated gas mileage of 38 combined mpg — and for even greater efficiency, the Tucson Plug-In Hybrid has an estimated fuel economy of 80 combined MPGe in electric-only mode and 35 combined mpg in hybrid mode. Also, the Tucson PHEV has the ability to drive on electric-only power for up to an estimated 33 miles.

Hyundai Tucson provides more interior space than the Toyota Corolla Cross

The third reason to buy a Hyundai Tucson instead of a Toyota Corolla Cross is the Tucson provides more interior space than the Corolla Cross. It has a total passenger volume of 108.2 cu-ft, compared to 95.0 cu-ft for the Corolla Cross. The biggest beneficiary of the greater interior space is the rear seat passengers. While the Corolla Cross offers only 32.0 inches of rear legroom, the Tucson offers 41.3 inches.

Also, the Tucson provides more storage space. It has a rear cargo capacity of 38.7 cu-ft, compared to 26.5 cu-ft for the Corolla Cross.

2022 Tucson has better warranty coverage than the 2022 Corolla Cross

The fourth reason to buy a 2022 Hyundai Tucson instead of a 2022 Toyota Corolla Cross is the Tucson has better warranty coverage than the Corolla Cross. Buyers of the Tucson can enjoy the peace of mind of its 5-year/60,000-mile basic warranty and a 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty. In comparison, the Corolla Cross only has a 3-year/36-mile basic warranty and a 5-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty.

The 2022 Hyundai Tucson has advantages over the 2022 Toyota Corolla Cross for performance, hybrid versions, interior space, and warranty coverage. These are solid reasons to buy a 2022 Tucson, not a 2022 Corolla Cross.
