Are you considering buying either of the two small crossover SUVs from Honda — the compact CR-V or the subcompact HR-V? The CR-V has multiple advantages in its favor. Here are four reasons to buy a 2022 Honda CR-V, not a 2022 Honda HR-V.

2022 Honda CR-V delivers better performance than the 2022 Honda HR-V

The first reason to buy a 2022 Honda CR-V instead of a 2022 Honda HR-V is the CR-V delivers better performance than the HR-V. Buyers of the CR-V have a choice of two engine options: a turbocharged 1.5-liter 4-cylinder (190 horsepower) and a hybrid (212 horsepower). In comparison, all HR-V models sold in the United States offer just one engine: a 1.8-liter four-cylinder, which generates only 141 horsepower.

The more powerful engine options for the CR-V result in quicker acceleration. It has a 0-60 mph time as low as 7.5 seconds, compared to 8.6 seconds for the HR-V. The CR-V is also better for towing. It has a maximum towing capacity of 1,500 pounds, while the HR-V is not rated for towing.

Unlike the 2022 HR-V, the 2022 CR-V offers a hybrid model

The second reason to buy a 2022 CR-V instead of a 2022 HR-V is that, unlike the HR-V, the CR-V offers a hybrid model in the U.S. Considering the high prices of gasoline these days, an efficient crossover SUV like the CR-V Hybrid is an appealing choice for automotive shoppers.

The gas-powered CR-V has a similar estimated fuel economy as the HR-V (up to 30 combined mpg). However, the CR-V Hybrid is considerably more efficient, with an estimated gas mileage of up to 38 combined mpg.

Honda CR-V provides more interior space than the Honda HR-V

The third reason to buy a Honda CR-V instead of a Honda HR-V is the CR-V, as the bigger crossover SUV, provides more interior space than the HR-V. It has a total passenger volume of 105.9 cu-ft, compared to 101.1 cu-ft for the HR-V. This includes 1.1 inches more rear legroom for the CR-V.

The space difference is even larger for the storage area. The CR-V has a rear cargo capacity of 39.2 cu-ft and a maximum cargo capacity of 75.8 cu-ft. In comparison, the HR-V has a rear cargo capacity of only 24.3 cu-ft and a maximum cargo capacity of just 58.8 cu-ft.

2022 CR-V is safer than the 2022 HR-V

The fourth reason to buy a 2022 CR-V instead of a 2022 HR-V is the CR-V is safer than the HR-V. One of the most respected authorities for vehicle safety is the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). For crash test evaluations, the CR-V earned an IIHS Top Safety Pick award.

However, the HR-V didn’t receive any safety honor from IIHS. Also, unlike the HR-V, the CR-V offers blind-spot monitoring and cross-traffic alert driving assistance features.

The 2022 Honda CR-V has advantages over the 2022 Honda HR-V for performance, a hybrid model, interior space, and safety. These are four key reasons for crossover SUV shoppers to buy a 2022 CR-V, not a 2022 HR-V.
