The Toyota Prius may be growing a little long in the tooth, but it’s not out of the fight yet. And with a new model potentially on the horizon with the 2023 Toyota Prius, there may be lots to look forward to. A popular competitor to the classic Prius hybrid is Hyundai’s sleek Ioniq hybrid sedan. If you’re trying to decide between a 2022 Toyota Prius and a 2022 Hyundai Ioniq, read on for four reasons why the Prius might be the better choice for you.

The 2022 Toyota Prius offers classic Toyota reliability

While Hyundai has made great strides in the last few years, Toyota still holds the crown as being one of the most reliable brands on the market. The Toyota Prius is one of the most reliable used vehicles you can buy. Hyundai’s standard new-car warranty does offer more coverage than Toyota’s warranty. However, choosing a 2022 Prius over a 2022 Ioniq will likely give you a better chance for long-term durability and reliability.

The new Prius offers more front interior room than the 2022 Ioniq

The 2022 Toyota Prius offers more front leg room, headroom, and hip room than the 2022 Hyundai Ioniq. However, the Hyundai offers slightly more total interior passenger volume. The additional front room in the Prius vs. the Ioniq may allow for a more comfortable ride on long journeys. This may be particularly true for taller drivers and front passengers.

The Prius has more cargo room than the new Hyundai Ioniq

The Prius boasts some of the most real-world cargo space among hatchbacks. The 2022 Prius offers 27.4 cubic feet of storage space behind the rear seat, with up to 50.7 cubic feet of storage with the rear seat folded. The 2022 Hyundai Ioniq is only good for 26.5 cubic feet of cargo space. The plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) offers even less. The Car Connection compliments the Prius’ “top-notch fuel economy, good cargo room, and available AWD”

The Hyundai Ioniq was discontinued for 2022; the Toyota Prius is more readily available

A big reason to consider the 2022 Toyota Prius over the 2022 Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid? Hyundai has chosen to discontinue the Ioniq after this model year. So, it may be more difficult to find the car you want. In the same time period, the Prius was named U.S. News’ best hybrid car for 2022. This critically acclaimed hybrid car is more readily available than the Ioniq, and it’s sticking around for the long haul.

With all this in mind: choose the Prius over the Ioniq

The 2022 Hyundai Ioniq does make a compelling case for itself. It looks stylish and performs well. But, the simple fact that the brand chose to kill it off after the 2022 model year speaks volumes. If you know you want a hybrid car that delivers over 50 mpg combined, consider the 2022 Toyota Prius over the 2022 Hyundai Ioniq.

Need even better fuel economy numbers? Consider the Toyota Prius Prime over the Ioniq PHEV.
