We aren’t ready for our week with the Ford Expedition to end. At least we’ve been able to make the most of our time with it by traveling and going off-roading. We’ve gotten to know the 2022 Ford Expedition on a deeper level, with pros and cons to share.

4 Pros and 3 Cons with the 2022 Ford Expedition

For a little background information, the 2022 Ford Expedition starts at $52,405. The top-spec model brings the cost up to $79,560, so this beast doesn’t come cheap. However, it may provide plenty of value to be worth every single penny.

The 2022 model spices things up with the 15.5-inch vertical touchscreen from the Ford F-150 and Ford Mustang Mach-E. It also got a high-performance V6 engine, and BlueCruise hands-free driving tech is available with the Platinum trim.

1. CON: The Expedition is thirsty

Don’t expect the 2022 Ford Expedition to save any cash at the fuel pump. This gigantic SUV gets an EPA-estimated 17 mpg in the city and up to 23 mpg on the highway. Adding 4×4 may reduce these figures.

While driving on the interstate, highways, back country roads, up mountain curves, and off-roading trails, we got about 17.4 mpg. The terrain didn’t seem to impact how much fuel the Expedition was sipping. Perhaps we would do a bit better if we used the Eco Mode more than the Sport Mode.

2. CON: The Ford Expedition is tall

Without running boards, you might have to take a running jump to leap into the 2022 Ford Expedition. It has 9.8-inch ground clearance, making access difficult for short folks and kids. The doors have wide openings, but there could be more handles for people to grab.

When you fold the seats flat to create a level load floor, the lift-over height is increased. I’m 5’1,” and the rear end comes up to my chest. You may have to lift heavy or awkward items up into the back.

We missed the adjustable air suspension with the Jeep Wagoneer and Grand Cherokee 4XE. Being able to lower the suspension came in handy!

3. CON: The Expedition is loud

It might be challenging to hear your kids from the third row in the Expedition. It could use an intercom system like some minivans, and other SUVs have. The distance between the front and rear is massive, making it difficult for sound to carry.

On top of that, the Expedition has loud climate controls. The air conditioning and heat blast at high levels. It’s a little distracting.

Our model has a laminated acoustic windshield and the Active Noise Cancellation system, but wind and road noise are still intrusive.

1. PRO: the Ford Expedition is fun

The 2022 Ford Expedition can be equipped with the 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 engine that cranks out 440 hp and 510 lb-ft of torque. The Sealth Performance Package adds unique suspension tuning, 22-inch black wheels, and red calipers.

You can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in about 5.1 seconds. Hitting the acceleration and hearing the engine roar is thrilling. Plus, the suspension keeps body roll at bay and feels confident around sharp bends.

The Expedition is nimble and easy to maneuver through crowded parking lots and narrow trails. It doesn’t feel as big as it really is.

2. PRO: The Expedition is spacious

The Ford Expedition isn’t short on passenger or cargo space. The front seats provide a wide range of adjustments. Plus, the second row is spacious for adults, with the ability to slide forward or back as needed.

You can fit two average-sized adults in the rear, and the third row reclines for added comfort. Child seats easily fit in the second and third rows too.

The Expedition offers 20.9 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seat, 63.9 cargo space behind the second row, and up to 104.6 cubes total. It can tow up to 9,300 lbs and carry a payload of up to 1,827 lbs.

3. The Expedition has real off-roading chops

We were worried that the size and weight of the 2022 Ford Expedition would limit its ability, but it did great in the woods. Opting for the Timberline trim increases the ground clearance to 10.6 inches, allowing it to easily clear obstacles.

It has 4×4 High, 4×4 Low, skid plates, a limited-slip differential, a 360-degree surround-view camera, and a locking rear differential to power through challenges. It has off-roading modes for Mud/Ruts. Snow/Wet, Sand, and Grass/Gravel/Snow.

The Expedition has plenty of power for tackling off-road challenges. It feels confident and controlled, even while climbing steep inclines. We slipped a little in piles of dried leaves, but the tires gripped rock faces extremely well.

4. PRO: The Ford Expedition is comfortable

The 2022 Ford Expedition will keep your entire family comfortable. The seats are well-padded and supportive for long drives. Only the third row lacks a little lumbar support. But each row can recline pretty far for naps.

The heated and ventilated seats work very quickly. The heated seats are very soothing, and the tri-zone climate control keeps everyone at their preferred temperature. Also, the ride is pretty smooth over the pavement.

Because the body roll is kept in check, people don’t get car sick around turns. Plus, everyone can relax with plenty of personal space.

Stay tuned for our complete Expedition review that covers all the specs! Until then, consider the Expedition’s pros and cons before making a decision.
