4 Great Chevy Tahoe Alternatives Under $55,0000
The Chevy Tahoe is the best-selling full-size SUV on the market. That makes sense: it’s big, it seats eight, it has an enormous cargo hold, it tows well, and it looks good. But, Ford, Nissan, Dodge and even GMC are aiming to steal some sales with their own full-sized SUVs that make great Chevy Tahoe alternatives that come close, or even beat, the Tahoe.
Is the 2023 Chevy Tahoe worth it?
The Chevy Tahoe does so many things well, it’s hard to beat it. It went through a full redesign for 2021 that updated its technology and its engines. Today’s Tahoe comes as one of the most capable full-sized SUVs, in that it can tow up to 8,400 pounds, it can hold 122.9 cubic feet of stuff, and comes standard with a 355-horsepower V8. The 2021 update also improved the styling of the Tahoe and allowed Chevy to add a 10.2-inch touchscreen, and several options like Chevy Safety Assist and new options like the magnetic ride control and multiple cameras.
The Tahoe starts at $52,800 and beats several more expensive rivals.
The Dodge Durango is the sporty Chevy Tahoe alternative
Let’s get this out of the way first, the Durango is getting old. It’s based on the previous generation of the Grand Cherokee, which is still sold. That being said, it’s still a competent seven-seat SUV that can tow up to 8,700 pounds, go off-roading, or tackle a drag strip, and has an interior that belies its age with modern tech and sporty feel, especially with its T-handle shifter.
Sure, it’s a bit smaller than the Tahoe, with just 85.1 cubic feet of space with the rear seats down. That smaller size does make getting in the way back seat a bit tougher. But come on, you can get this thing with a Hellcat 6.2-liter V8 that makes 710 horsepower! With a V6, the 2022 Durango starts at $38,495, which leaves a lot of room for a lot of options, like the towing package, the G/T trim or any number of custom stripe packages.
The Nissan Armada is the unconventional Chevy Tahoe alternative
The Nissan Armada can seat up to eight people and offers generous room for passengers in all three rows for $49,900. While its styling is unconventional, its standard features seem to hit the mark, like its heated power seats, dual-zone climate, 120-volt outlet, and large 12.3-inch touchscreen. Its’ also big and holds 95.4 cubic feet of stuff in the back. It comes only with Nissan’s 5.6-liter V8 that puts out an impressive 400 horsepower and also Nissan Safety Shield, which is the company’s suite of safety aids.
The Armada also acquits itself with an 8,500-pound towing capacity and an integrated trailer brake controller. It also offers either a two-wheel drive version or a four-wheel drive version with a transfer case that lets you click into high and low-speed gears for off-roading. If you like the V8, act quick: according to CarScoops, it’s getting a twin-turbo V6 soon.
The Ford Expedition is the obvious Chevy Tahoe alternative
The $53,875 Ford Expedition and the Chevy Tahoe are the original full-sized American SUVs based on trucks. The Expedition was revamped for 2022 and now comes standard with SYNC4 and a 12-inch center screen and several driver-assistance features and retains its monster size and capability. The Expedition certainly offers a lot of utility, like a maximum 9,300-pound tow rating, generous room in the third row, and a maximum of 104.6 cubic feet of cargo space. Its standard 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 has 380 horsepower.
The Expedition is moving beyond the school pickup line and added the Timberline package, which gives it a boost in clearance, and the Stealth Edition Performance Package with 440 horsepower, which helps this heavy SUV keep up with even the quickest of traffic. Higher-spec versions can get Ford BlueCruise, too.
The GMC Yukon is the same SUV but with a nicer interior
Picking the Yukon over the Tahoe is really a matter of taste over capability. Underneath, it’s the same SUV, but it does have some styling cues and features that the Tahoe doesn’t. Like the Tahoe, the $52,500 Tahoe comes standard with a 5.3-liter V8 and full-sized capability. The rest comes down to the bigger chrome grille, a reworked interior that, even in base versions, comes nicely equipped and with new options. While you can’t get a Yukon for less than $55,000, you can’t get a Tahoe as nice as a Yukon Denali for any price.
There are several competent and newer, full-sized SUVs available today than a Tahoe. While we know that the 2023 Toyota Sequoia has a lot going for it, it starts at $58,300 and can easily top $60,000 with some basic options, pushing it from family hauler to luxury SUV. The same goes for the GMC Yukon, which is the same SUV as the Tahoe, simply dressed up. We didn’t include the big guns from BMW, Audi or Mercedes, either, because of their price points.
