When you leave your home, you likely make sure your doors are locked. It’s just common sense. I mean, you’ve spent your lifetime filling your beloved dwelling with treasures. However, you may be doing yourself a disservice with garage habits. In fact, you might be jeopardizing the safety of your home.

You might be leaving your garage, your cars, and even your home open to theft or vandalism with your daily mistakes

Crime is a serious concern for just about everyone. As a result, shrewd Americans ensure they lock their cars and homes. After all, many criminals are opportunists. The easiest quarry is the best quarry. However, when you secure your home, you may leave yourself open to crime with your habits.

Still, you can stay one step ahead of criminals by scrubbing some of these mistakes from your typical behaviors.

  • Leaving your garage door opener in your car
  • Using your door keypad without covering it
  • Leaving a hide-a-key or car keys in an obvious place
  • Never forget to secure your garage door and interior door

One of the biggest mistakes vehicle owners can make is leaving their remote-controlled door opener in their car. It’s especially hazardous should you leave your car parked outdoors. According to KSN, police officers warn against leaving these door openers in parked vehicles. Thieves may break into parked cars just to gain access to an opener. Consequently, thieves can use them to access your valuables, if not access your home through an interior door.

Some residential car holds have keypads for exterior access without a remote opener. Unfortunately, if you use this keypad without covering your actions observers could acquire your code. Use your other hand or the keypad cover to obscure your code. Additionally, owners should refrain from sharing their code with people they don’t trust.

In addition to protecting your keypad code, avoid leaving an obvious hide-a-key for your home inside your garage. Some seasoned thieves know how to spot these tricks. Moreover, owners should avoid hanging their car keys with their garage-kept vehicles. Doing so makes theft that much easier.

Finally, never forget to close your garage door. It might sound simple, but it’s something that many Americans neglect. More importantly, owners with an interior door should keep them locked.
