Chrysler’s 300 sedan has been roaming the streets for around 18 years now, and the original name “300” spans back decades. It makes sense, too; the 300 is a big, comfortable ride with an optional V8 and available all-wheel drive (AWD). However, the 300 isn’t alone in the comfortable sedan segment. Check out these three solid Chrysler 300 alternatives under $40,000, like the Nissan Maxima and Acura TLX.

Is a Nissan Maxima a good car?

The Nissan Maxima is a good car for potential owners who want a nicer Nissan sedan than the beloved Altima. Nissan’s posher sedan starts at $38,935, just under the $40,000 criteria. Unlike the 300, the 2022 Nissan Maxima earned a Top Safety Pick+ rating from Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the agency’s highest rating. However, TrueCar says that the Maxima has a cramped back seat and small trunk; you’re not going to want for space with the comparable Chrysler sedan. 

Is the Dodge Charger a good Chrysler 300 alternative?

The Dodge Charger is a large sedan that shares two engines with the Chrysler 300, so it’s a natural alternative to the Chrysler 300. Both the 300 and the Charger offer the 3.6L Pentastar V6 engine, and the 300S offers an optional variant of the 5.7L V8 that the Charger R/T uses. Of course, the $40,000 threshold is too low for the R/T, so the Chrysler 300 alternatives are the SXT and GT. Still, the SXT and GT offer optional AWD, just like the 300. 

Additionally, the Charger has more aggressive muscle sedan styling, a library of higher horsepower engines, and widebodies at higher trims. However, the 300 has a more refined cabin, including available diamond-stitched leather and a characteristic analog clock. 

Is a Kia Stinger worth it?

The Kia Stinger is a thoroughbred sports sedan and an unorthodox yet viable Chrysler 300 alternative. The Stinger starts at $37,735, around $2,600 more than the 300. However, the Stinger GT Line produces 300 horsepower from its turbocharged 2.5L four-cylinder engine, enough to get it to 60 mph in just 5.7 seconds. That’s quite a bit faster than the V6-powered 300S; Car and Driver tested that Chrysler sedan to 60 mph in 6.3 seconds. 

Is the Acura TLX a Chrysler 300 alternative?

While the Acura TLX is classified as a midsize sedan, it’s still a solid four-door alternative to the large and lazy Chrysler 300. First, the TLX offers contemporary luxury features like wireless charging and ventilated leather seats. Also, with 22 mpg city and 31 mpg highway, the TLX is more efficient than either the V6 or V8-powered Chrysler 300. 

Finally, the sporty, agile Acura TLX has a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the IIHS. However, with a starting price of $39,995, the 2022 Acura TLX just barely falls under the $40,000 criteria. 

Should you consider any of these Chrysler 300 alternatives?

Every one of these vehicles offers sedan practicality and budget-friendly luxury. However, the Acura TLX and Kia Stinger are sportier and safer. Still, if you want handsome exterior styling, optional AWD, and even V8 power at the top trim, the Chrysler 300 is a solid choice. That said, Stellantis is discontinuing both the 300 and the Charger before the 2024 model year.
