The world is shifting toward EVs, making PHEVs an overlooked corner of the automotive market. That said, PHEVs can be a great transitional point between regular cars and all-electric vehicles, and that’s why many automakers, including Jeep, have a couple of PHEVs in their lineups. The 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe is one of those PHEVs, and here’s a look at four advantages it has over another Jeep PHEV, the Wrangler 4xe.

1. The 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe has better fuel economy ratings

One of the main reasons car shoppers want to buy a hybrid, a PHEV, or an EV is their efficiency ratings. In this regard, the Grand Cherokee 4xe is a much more efficient Jeep than the Wrangler 4xe. According to Edmunds, the Grand Cherokee 4xe has a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, and it works with an electric motor to get 375 hp and 470 lb-ft of torque.

The Wrangler 4xe has a similar powertrain, but the Grand Cherokee 4xe is ultimately more efficient. When each Jeep is running on just gas, the Grand Cherokee 4xe has a combined fuel economy of 23 mpg, and this is much better than the Wrangler 4xe’s combined 20 mpg. In hybrid mode, the Grand Cherokee 4xe is still more efficient, as it gets a combined 56 MPGe, which is more than the Wrangler 4xe’s combined 49 MPGe.

2. It also gets more electric driving range

On top of that, PHEVs can go on battery-only mode, meaning they will only draw power from their battery, essentially making the car an EV for a short time. The Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe is the better Jeep in this area, too, as it can go 26 miles on battery power alone. The Jeep Wrangler 4xe, in comparison, can only go 22 miles on battery power alone. That’s a difference of 4 miles, which can be a meaningful amount for short errands.

3. Jeep gave the Grand Cherokee 4xe a larger gas tank too

Another area where the Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe is better than the Jeep Wrangler 4xe is its gas tank. The Grand Cherokee 4xe has a gas tank capacity of 19 gallons, which is bigger than the Wrangler 4xe’s gas tank capacity of 17.2 gallons. That’s a difference of 1.8 gallons, which is a small amount, but it can pay meaningful dividends considering the fact that the Grand Cherokee 4xe is a much more efficient car.

Cars that run on gas also have range estimates, and the Wrangler 4xe only has a range of about 344 miles. However, since the Grand Cherokee 4xe is more efficient and has a larger gas tank, its range is 456 miles. That’s a range difference of 112 miles.

4. You will be able to carry more cargo in the Grand Cherokee 4xe

The Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe is also the bigger Jeep regarding cargo capacity. According to Edmunds, without folding the seats down, the Grand Cherokee 4xe has about 37.7 cu. ft. of cargo capacity. Meanwhile, the Jeep Wrangler 4xe only has 27.7 cu. ft. of cargo capacity when its seats aren’t folded down. That’s a difference of 10 cu. ft.

With the rear seats folded down, the Grand Cherokee 4xe has a max cargo capacity of 70.8 cu. ft. The Wrangler 4xe, with its seats folded down, gets up to 67.4 cu. ft. of cargo capacity. This narrows the gap between the two Jeeps, but it still means that the Grand Cherokee 4xe has 3.4 cu. ft. more maximum cargo space than the Wrangler 4xe does.
