If you’re looking for a German luxury sedan, the 2023 BMW 5 Series is a great choice. Its excellent ride and handling characteristics make it the benchmark for others in its class. However, if you’re not smitten with the 5 Series and all of its luxurious amenities, there are other alternatives in the same category. Here are five unique examples.

1. 2023 Audi A6

If you’re looking for an engaging drive but don’t want to buy a BMW 5 Series, the 2022 Audi A6 is an excellent substitute. The A6 offers an upscale interior that’s filled with tech-savvy features in a contemporary design. It has features like a touch-sensitive HVAC panel, soft-leather seats, and a digital instrument panel.

It also has plenty of power. The Audi A6’s 55-series models come with a 355-hp turbocharged V6, and the A6’s with a 45 designation comes with a 261-hp turbocharged four-cylinder engine. Like the BMW 5 Series, both engines are mated to a 48-volt hybrid system that assists with the auto start/stop feature and other electrical equipment.

2. 2023 Genesis G80

If you’re looking for something truly unique, check out the 2023 Genesis G80. The G80 is the brand’s midsize sedan, and it has an elegant and contemporary-styled exterior and lavish interior. Some of its most notable amenities include ventilated front seats, a full leather interior, a tri-zone auto climate control system, and a 21-speaker Lexicon sound system.

According to Car and Driver, “[The G80] favors comfortable cruising rather than performance driving.” That doesn’t mean that it doesn’t have any power, though. Under its hood is a choice of either a turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder or a twin-turbo six-cylinder engine. The former puts out 300 hp while the latter produces 375. Of course, we recommend the V6 engine if you’re looking for something that can keep up with the BMW 5 Series.

3. 2023 Jaguar XF

The 2023 Jaguar XF is the last sedan in its lineup to soldier on – the rest are all SUVs. We can see why the XF is sticking around, as it has a handsome exterior and a well-appointed interior. The cabin offers a high-tech feel with plenty of features, including a large touchscreen infotainment system, heated and cooled seats, and a 12-speaker Meridian sound system.

The Jaguar XF can keep up with the BMW 5 Series as well. Under its hood is a choice between a 246-hp turbocharged, 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and a 296-hp one. The editors at Car and Driver found that the more powerful XF can get up to 60 mph from a standstill in 6.2 seconds, and they enjoyed the XF’s “supple suspension, which delivered fluid handling along with exceptional ride quality.” That sounds like a true 5 Series competitor to us.

Unique alternatives to buying a BMW 5 Series
