Consumer Reports doesn’t like that the 2022 Toyota Tacoma is outdated
Firstly, the 2022 Toyota Tacoma feels outdated. For a truck that hasn’t been redesigned since 2016, it’s incredible it took this long for people to notice. Consumer Reports says it “drives like a primitive, agricultural-era relic.” In addition, the publication thinks Toyota may have slept through the past decade of advances in truck technology and interior design. That is to say, the interior and technology have fallen behind other models.
In addition, recent pickup truck model years, even full-size versions, are luxurious and smooth to drive. Compared to the Honda Ridgeline or Ram 1500, the Tacoma falls short. Additionally, CR said it doesn’t feel quick when accelerating, which is unfortunate compared to other V6 models. Other complaints include a shuddering chassis and wind and engine noise. Inside the Tacoma, it’s difficult to hear anything other than the truck noise. CR reported struggling to hear their own conversation from inside the cabin.
Consumer Reports doesn’t like the Tacoma four-wheel drive system
According to CR, the 2022 Toyota Tacoma four-wheel-drive system is part-time only. In short, this means the driver has to use their judgment for when to engage or disengage it when driving. Since it isn’t meant for dry, paved roads, drivers must reengage the system every time they enter slippery conditions. However, it’s an excellent performer when driving off-road.
Contrary to CR’s complaints, it said models with the TRD Off-Road 4×4 trim have selectable terrain settings and crawl control. Drivers can electronically adjust traction control and throttle for extreme off-roading conditions using these settings. Crawl mode automatically works the throttle on a steep hill, reducing the wheelspin to maintain a deliberately slow speed. CR reported that the systems work very well, and the Tacoma is great for off-road driving.
Should you buy a 2022 Toyota Tacoma?
Overall, the 2022 Toyota Tacoma is still one of the best midsize pickup trucks. Although it fell deeper into most experts’ rankings this year, it still holds up well. Other trucks have improved for 2022 to compete with the Tacoma. Moreover, the fall in rankings is because they’re getting better, not Toyota’s truck getting worse. However, the Tacoma is due for its next redesign in 2024, so we expect big things for that model year.
