You don’t want to get stuck with the wrong SUV! An experienced mechanic is warning drivers to avoid three popular SUVs that just aren’t worth it. These options are too expensive, uncomfortable, and unreliable.

Mike Winter has owned MDP Diesel & Auto Repair for years in Jackson, Michigan. Tons of SUVs have passed through his shop, allowing him to easily determine which options are worth buying and which models drivers need to avoid.

1. Toyota 4Runner

People might want to skip the Toyota 4Runner unless they plan to take it off-roading on the regular. The 2025 model starts at $42,220, a high premium cost that comes at the cost of comfort.

It’s loud, stiff, and bumpy. Plus, most people stick to the pavement, meaning the extra off-roading features are a waste of money. A cheaper option would be better on the highway.

      2. Jeep Wrangler

Unlike the Toyota 4Runner, the Jeep Wrangler isn’t known for being particularly reliable. Plus, it is even more uncomfortable at highway speeds. The interior noise could harm your ears and they’re prone to swaying.

The 2025 Jeep Wrangler starts at $32,095 and is designed for off-road abuse. Most drivers probably won’t take advantage of the extra off-roading gear.

        3. Ford Escape

Another one of the SUVs to avoid is the Ford Escape. The 2025 Escape starts at $29,150, which is surprisingly high. While it is comfortable and convenient, it could cause financial headaches due to high repair costs.

A few common reliability issues include coolant issues, engine problems, high oil consumption, and electrical issues.
