When the experts at Consumer Reports send out the Annual Auto Survey to owners, it gathers reliability data about popular cars, trucks, and SUVs. The survey asks about issues that might have popped up in the last year and covers 17 aspects of vehicle ownership. Unfortunately, these SUVs lost Consumer Reports’ recommendation this year. While owners reported issues with these sport utility vehicles, statements from Ford and Hyundai address the situation and offer an update.

When it comes to reliability, the 2023 Ford Bronco Sport is one of the SUVs that lost Consumer Reports’ recommendation. Unfortunately, Ford as a brand saw a trend of unreliability for various reasons. This SUV has important safety features like blind-spot warning, forward collision warning, and pedestrian detection.

Owners report issues with the anti-lock brake system and the brakes in general. Other problems that Bronco Sport owners mentioned in the survey include engine issues, problems with the head gasket, and unidentifiable noises and leaks. This led to the Bronco Sport being one of the SUVs that lost Consumer Reports’ recommendation. However, Ford says it is aware of concerns and has already been working on repairs.

Ford’s Mustang Mach-E also lost Consumer Reports’ recommendation

Ford hit it big with the release of the electric Mustang Mach-E, but it has had a few hiccups since hitting the market. While the 2023 Ford Mustang Mach-E has a good range and plenty of power from its electric motors, it falls short in a few areas.

In the Annual Auto Survey responses, owners of the Mach-E noted many issues with in-car electronics. The screen froze and sometimes required replacement. Other problems include issues with the electrical system, the battery pack, battery cells, and charging issues.

Ford actually stated Consumer Reports about the Bronco and Mach-E problems, noting that the company was listening to concerns. “The survey results were from a population of vehicles early in the launch of these vehicles, and those concerns have since been addressed.” Various OTA (over-the-air) updates have helped improve the situation since then. It sounds like these Ford SUVs that lost Consumer Reports’ recommendation won’t be on the list for long.

What happened with the Hyundai Kona?

The 2023 Hyundai Kona would have been a good option for those looking for a subcompact SUV. It comes with forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking as standard equipment. When asked about the first year of ownership, people reported issues with the climate system. More specifically, the Kona’s air conditioning compressor and condenser.

Other buyers reported issues with the engine that required a rebuild or replacement. Some said the fuel system and steering proved to be a headache as well. Hyundai spoke with Consumer Reports about the issues, and said it has taken steps to address it.

“Hyundai is constantly evaluating the performance of its models utilizing internal data, input from third parties like Consumer Reports, direct reports from owners, and a variety of other sources with the goal of continually improving our vehicles.” Hopefully, the issues with the 2023 Kona are in the past.

While these sport utility vehicles might have lost the coveted “recommended” accolade from Consumer Reports this year, there is plenty of room for improvement. The statements from Ford and Hyundai indicate that there fixes underway. Hopefully owners will have better news to report in next year’s Annual Auto Survey.
