If your teenager is about to hit the road and you need an SUV, these options from Honda might work. These new and used safe Honda SUVs for your teen driver have high safety scores and systems to keep everyone safe. On top of that, these sport utility vehicles come in under $30,000 and meet other criteria set forth by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

The 2013 CR-V is one of the best Honda SUVs for teen drivers

If you are looking for safe Honda SUVs for your teen driver, a used CR-V might be worth a test drive. Each year, the IIHS and Consumer Reports recommend some of the best SUVs for teen drivers. There are both new and used vehicles on the list, but the 2013 Honda CR-V was one of the recommended small SUVs.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety says that the best SUVs for teens have a few attributes. SUVs are a good option because of the bigger size and generally calm demeanor, so no sports cars or high horsepower vehicles. Cars under 2,750 pounds were eliminated, as were bigger trucks that can be harder to control.

Coming in at under $13,000, this year of the Honda SUV earned the Top Safety Pick award. There were only five crashworthiness tests back then, and the CR-V earned high marks in four. In the small overlap front, it earned an average score.

The 2023 HR-V is another safe Honda SUV for your teen

On the list of safe Honda SUVs that are new this year, the 2023 Honda HR-V met all of the requirements. All of the suggested vehicles earned an IIHS Top Safety Pick or TSP+ award this year, which is what the HR-V earned. This is a good SUV for teen drivers, achieving the highest score on all eight of the newest safety tests.

In the new crash avoidance and mitigation sections, the HR-V performed well in vehicle-to-vehicle front crash prevention and vehicle-to-pedestrian front crash prevention. The seat belt reminder also met all the criteria, meaning your teenager will be reminded to buckle with loud alarms.

Starting at around $24,400, there is a little wiggle room in the budget too. That could be helpful for insurance costs or other fees down the line.

Another Top Safety Pick Plus winner, the 2023 Honda CR-V is another small and safe SUV for teen drivers. It earned high marks on the overlap front and updated side tests. Additionally, all trim levels of the CR-V received LED reflector headlights that performed well on tests. Both the high and low beams provided good visibility on the roads.

Coming in at the top of the budget, the CR-V is around $29,700 for this year. That does not leave much room for other expenses, but it is one of the safe Honda SUVs around. “If you’re spending the money on a new vehicle that’s likely to be in your family for many years, we want you to get the most safety available,” IIHS Chief Research Officer David Zuby said.

These safe Honda SUVs are good options for teen drivers and will hopefully offer some peace of mind to the parents. While crash testing and safety ratings are some of the most critical factors, the budget is also essential. Staying under $30,000 fits many budgets, but new SUVs are more expensive than ever before. If the new options listed here are too expensive, try looking for a higher trim level from 2021 or 2022.
