Reliability is an important feature to seek when you are on a budget and trying to find a new SUV. Consumer Reports has three reliable new SUVs that come in under $30,000. During Consumer Reports’ testing, these sport utility vehicles also returned at least 26 mpg.
The Chevrolet TrailBlazer is a reliable new SUV under $30,000
Consumer Reports recommends the 2022 Chevrolet TrailBlazer as a reliable new SUV. The TrailBlazer scored well on the road test and the predicted reliability. Consumer Reports managed to get 27 mpg overall during testing from the 1.2L turbo engine. The subcompact sport utility vehicle has a decent ride and ample room in the cargo area.
Some of the highs noted from testing included the extra interior room, the mid-range torque, fuel economy, and easy-to-use controls on the infotainment. Chevrolet equipped it with forward collision warning (FCW) and automatic emergency braking (AEB) with pedestrian detection. Blind-spot warning is an optional active safety feature.

It is no secret that Consumer Reports is a fan of the 2022 Subaru Crosstrek. Returning 29 mpg overall during testing, the Crosstrek came in first on the list of similar subcompact sport utility vehicles. The Crosstrek also scored well on the road test and predicted reliability sections, plus it has a history of owner satisfaction. The 2022 Subaru Crosstrek is a reliable new SUV under $30,000.
Subaru also offers a plug-in version of the Crosstrek, but Consumer Reports didn’t think the fuel economy bump made the high price a good value. The Crosstrek has ample ground clearance and can handle some light off-roading. FCW and AEB with pedestrian detection are included with the automatic transmission but not with the manual. BSW is optional.

The Nissan Rogue Sport sport utility vehicle has a lot of safety features
The 2022 Nissan Rogue Sport is a reliable new SUV that scored well on Consumer Reports tests. The road test score was above-average, as was the predicted reliability. The predicted owner satisfaction score was below-average, but the Rogue Sport did return 26 mpg overall during testing. CR said the powertrain was “pleasant though not particularly powerful.”
Consumer Reports called the Rogue Sport “practical with a modest footprint and noted the interior was quiet on the roads. The controls are easy to use as well. Nissan included FCW, AEB, and BSW standard, which is a big plus.

Consumer Reports has a thing for the Subaru brand and recently scored three Subaru models among the best SUVs of 2022. If you aren’t into off-roading on the weekends, you probably have some more wiggle room. Both the Nissan and Chevrolet sport utility vehicles are reliable and come in under budget. Keep an eye out for deals on the 2022 SUVs as brands start to push out the 2023 models.
