Finding a reliable SUV can seem like an impossible task, but it doesn’t have to be. These are three reliable and popular small SUVs for 2022 and 2023 that owners and experts agree on. Don’t overlook some of the sport utility vehicles that just hit the market, either. Mazda, Kia, and Honda are on top of it.

Edmunds rated a lot of small SUVs, but the 2023 Mazda CX-50 was one of the best. It also happens to be brand new for this year, with a totally new interior with more room than it looks. A new turbo engine offers 256 hp, or the base engine gets a good 187 hp.

Some of Edmunds’ favorite safety features include Lane Keep Assist, Rear Smart Brake Support, and Blind Spot Prevention. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gave the 2023 Mazda CX-50 high scores on its important crashworthiness courses.

MSRP Price Range: $27,550 – $42,300

Combined Fuel Economy: 25 – 27 mpg

There isn’t much to dislike about the 2022 Honda CR-V; it is a reliable and popular small SUV, after all. Edmunds says it has quick acceleration and good fuel economy, which don’t usually go together.

Some noteworthy safety features include Collision Mitigation Braking and Lane Keeping Assist. Blind Spot Information System also helps keep the driver aware of any vehicles hiding in the blind spot. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) gave the 2022 Honda CR-V a five-star safety rating.

MSRP Price Range: $26,800 – $36,600

Combined Fuel Economy: 29 – 30 mpg

Don’t overlook the recently updated 2023 Kia Sportage

Edmunds says the 2023 Kia Sportage stands out in the crowd thanks to its comfortable ride and large seats. The new X-Pro trim helps the Sportage compete with some of the other off-road capable SUVs. Some standout features include Junction Turning Detection to help turn left at an intersection. Lane Following Assist and Highway Driving Assist help the driver in other situations. The IIHS gave the Kia the Top Safety Pick award for 2023, making it a good pick for reliable and popular small SUVs.

MSRP Price Range: $25,990 – $36,790

Combined Fuel Economy: 25 – 28 mpg

You can skip the 2022 Buick Envision

Edmunds says the hard truth about the 2022 Buick Envision is that it is average across the board. It has a smooth ride and a quiet interior. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard. Some of the best safety features are Safety Alert Seat, Rear Seat Reminder, Side Blind Zone, and Rear Cross-Traffic Alerts. These systems help alert the driver of hidden vehicles or other problems.

The NHTSA gave the Envision a five-star safety rating, too. There isn’t anything wrong with the Buick, but its competition offers more for a similar price.

MSRP Price Range: $31,800 – $42,200

Combined Fuel Economy: 25 – 26 mpg
