Did you know that the Toyota Tacoma is the best-selling midsize truck? It’s not much of a surprise because it’s one durable, long-lasting option. However, the competition is starting to catch up. As the 2023 Toyota Tacoma shows its age, you may want to consider other options.

Is the 2023 Toyota Tacoma worth buying?

Of course, the 2023 Toyota Tacoma is worth buying. It has the classic truck DNA that people love. It’s rugged with an excellent reliability rating, plus the Tacoma has an excellent resale value.

Critics, such as AutoBlog, note that the Tacoma still has an attractive exterior style, and it’s one of the best options for off-roading. However, it hasn’t been updated since 2016, and its age is hard to ignore. This is why AutoBlog has three reasons to check out the competition.

1. The Tacoma is unrefined

According to AutoBlog, the 2023 Toyota Tacoma could use some polish. The 2.7-liter four-cylinder base engine with 159 hp and 180 lb-ft of torque is one of the weakest options in the class.

You can upgrade to the 3.5-liter V6 engine for 278 hp and 265 lb-ft of torque. The engine is paired with a six-speed automatic transmission, and a manual option is available.

While it has an adequate acceleration with the more powerful engine, it’s pretty loud and intrusive. Plus, the transmission is clunky and spends a lot of time searching for the right gear. The ride is bumpy, and the Tacoma isn’t very agile.

Rivals seem to put more focus on driver and passenger comfort. The Tacoma is a little harsher, especially regarding the off-roading trims.

2. The Toyota Tacoma is dated

The 2023 Toyota Tacoma could use some interior updates. It looks older with the use of heavy plastics and other cheap materials. However, some people may enjoy its basic and simple layout.

Other rivals have new tech, while the Tacoma has the same 7.0- and 8.0-inch infotainment screens with dated graphics. The digital gauge cluster could use an update as well. But at least it offers Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

You can opt for a wireless phone charger and take advantage of multiple USB ports. However, the Tacoma doesn’t offer a built-in mobile hotspot or some of the off-roading camera views like rivals have.

3. The Tacoma is cramped

The 2023 Toyota Tacoma could make better use of its space. The front seats have a low position that’s hard to adjust due to a lack of room. Then the backseat is even smaller, making it difficult for adults to sit comfortably.

There isn’t much cargo space inside the cab. While the center console is generous, the rest of the storage cubbies are pretty small. However, you can get the Tacoma with a five-foot or six-foot bed.

The Tacoma can only tow up to 6,800 lbs, while options like the Chevy Colorado can tow up to 7,700 lbs. But the Tacoma can carry a payload of up to 1,685 lbs, which is great.

The Tacoma is an excellent truck for off-roading. It’s low maintenance, will last a long time, and maintains its resale value well. However, rivals have a more comfortable ride, a little more muscle, and updated tech.
