3 Pickup Trucks With High Rear-Seat Safety Ratings From Consumer Reports

Even though new cars and trucks are safer than ever, Consumer Reports says some are still lacking in the second row. While this list primarily consists of SUVs and cars, these are some pickup trucks with high rear-seat safety ratings from Consumer Reports. It isn’t surprising that some of the most popular pickup trucks from Ford and Toyota made the list.

Consumer Reports ranked the 2022 Ford F-150 XLT in the top 10 for vehicles with safe back seats. In the areas of child-seat fit, booster seat use, seat belt reminders, and head restraints. That means that the F-150 XLT offers a good fit for car seats and has LATCH accessibility. An improperly installed car seat in the back can be a huge safety concern, but this truck received good scores.

Ford’s truck had good scores for the rear head restraints to prevent injury and whiplash. Consumer Reports gives points for trucks that don’t have removable head restraints and those with restraints in all passenger seats. As far as pickup trucks with high rear-seat safety ratings go, the 2022 Ford F-150 XLT scored the highest.

Consumer Reports found that the 2022 Toyota Tundra was a good fit for children and booster seats. Another test is the ability to fit a booster seat and how easy it is for children to buckle in. Toyota’s truck did well on both of these, receiving a high score.

A rear-occupant alert helps prevent deaths by alerting the driver that the rear seat is occupied. This alert might also remind the driver that the back door was opened at some point. The Toyota Tundra received good scores in this area, leaving it in the top 15 of all tested vehicles.

Rear-Seat Safety Features Score: 57

Even though the 2022 Ford Maverick is brand new, it still made it onto the list. Ford’s Maverick excelled in the area of restraints. All passengers in the back seat would have adequate protection in the case of an accident. In most of the other areas, the Maverick received average scores.

Unfortunately, the 2022 Maverick did not deliver in the area of rear occupant alert. That means there isn’t an alert or reminder for the driver to check the back seat. This led to an overall score of 43, making the top 25.

Rear-Seat Safety Features Score: 43

Consumer Reports suggests that change is on the horizon for rear seat safety. More automakers are adding systems and features to keep backseat passengers safer than ever. Safety groups like the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) have also started testing rear seat safety. Hopefully, this list of vehicles with a safe back seat will be longer for 2023.
