3 of the Best New SUVs Over $50,000 Are Electric
Looking for a luxurious SUV and not afraid of the EV revolution? Some of the best SUVs over $50,000 for 2023 are electric and have plenty of luxury features. These sport utility vehicles from Ford, Tesla, and Hyundai have high safety scores, long ranges, and plenty of instant power.
What are some of the best new SUVs over $50,000?
The highest-rated SUV on MotorTrend over $50,000 is the 2023 Hyundai Ioniq 5. This might not be surprising since drivers enjoy driving Hyundai’s electric SUV. Most versions of the Ioniq 5 are under budget, but some top-of-the-line and long-range options go over $50,000.
Some highlights of this Hyundai SUV include its futuristic but still appealing design and super-fast charging architecture. Hyundai offers two battery pack sizes this year, 58-kWh or 77.4 kWh. If you want the longest-range Ioniq, the rear-wheel drive version with the bigger battery pack offers 303 miles. This also gets 225 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque, while the smaller battery gets 168 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. All-wheel drive is available but drops the range down to 266 miles.
Trim | System | Range |
Ioniq 5 58-kWh battery | RWD | 220 miles |
Ioniq 5 77.4 kWh battery | RWD | 303 miles |
Ioniq 5 77.4 kWh battery | AWD | 266 miles |
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration gave the 2023 Ioniq 5 a five-star safety rating. Hyundai’s safety systems, like Forward Collision Warning, Lane Departure Warning, and Crash Imminent Braking, also earned high marks. In addition, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave the 2023 Ioniq its Top Safety Pick Plus award.
Does Tesla make one of the best new SUVs over $50,000?
The 2023 Tesla Model Y remains one of the best SUVs over $50,000. As expected, the MY is fast and can access Tesla’s massive Supercharger network. Even though this network is open to other non-Tesla EVs, that isn’t the case at all charging stations. Either way, the Model Y has five or seven seats and can be equipped with all-wheel drive.
There are a variety of ranges for the Model Y and its configurations. Those are below in the chart for easy reading. Bigger wheels mean less range, but the MY still has enough for most drivers.
Trim | Wheels | Range |
Model Y | 19-inch wheels | 279 miles |
Model Y | 20-inch wheels | 269 miles |
Model Y Long Range | 19-inch wheels | 330 miles |
Model Y Long Range | 20-inch wheels | 318 miles |
Model Y Performance | 21-inch wheels | 303 miles |
Even though Tesla has had some issues with standardized safety tests, the 2023 Model Y earned the Top Safety Pick award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration did not rate the MY this year. Tesla has its own safety systems on this luxury SUV that do not always translate to standardized crash testing.
Ford’s Mustang Mach-E is popular and brand-new

The list of best electric SUVs cannot end without the 2023 Ford Mustang Mach-E. Ford’s foray into electric vehicles has not gone unnoticed, and people seem to really enjoy the Mach-E. It has a huge touchscreen in the middle for easy infotainment navigation, and 2023 brought more range for the trim levels.
Ford offers plenty of trim levels to choose from, most of which inch over the $50,000 mark. These are the 2023 Ford Mustang Mach-E Select, Premium, California Route 1, GT, and the GT Performance edition. Horsepower and torque vary from trim to trim but are between 266 and 480 hp. The top-of-the-line versions veer into luxury SUV territory.
Trim | System | Range |
Mach-E Select | RWD | 247 miles |
Mach-E Select | AWD | 224 miles |
Mach-E Premium | RWD | 306 miles |
Mach-E Premium | AWD | 290 miles |
Mach-E California Route 1 | AWD | 312 miles |
Mach-E GT | AWD | 270 miles |
Mach-E GT Performance | AWD | 260 miles |
The 2023 Mach-E earned the Top Safety Pick award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. While the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration did not rate the Ford Mustang Mach-E yet this year, it will likely give a score after testing is complete. Ford’s safety systems, like Forward Collision Warning, Lane Departure Warning, and Crash Imminent Braking, all passed the NHTSA testing criteria.
The list of best new SUVs also has some traditional gasoline-powered versions, like the 2023 Kia EV6, the 2023 Lincoln Aviator, and the 2023 Kia Telluride. It doesn’t look like the competition will get any less fierce, so every brand has to have plenty of high-quality SUVs available in every category. These electric SUVs are the best of the best for 2023!
