The best midsize SUVs from 2020 have a few things in common: good fuel economy, high reliability scores, and plenty of room. These midsize luxury SUVs to buy used come from brands you trust, like Acura, Audi, and Infiniti, but there is one sport utility vehicle to skip.

The 2020 Acura MDX is a midsize luxury SUV to buy used

U.S. News says the 2020 Acura MDX has a low projected cost of ownership and excellent fuel economy. The MDX can fit between six and seven passengers and comes with all-wheel drive or front-wheel drive. J.D. Power and U.S. News give the 2020 Acura MDX a reliability score of 80 out of 100, which is above average for the segment. The 2020 Audi Q7 doesn’t disappoint on luxury. It received a refresh for 2020, and with that came an upgraded cabin. While the Q7 does have three rows, the third row is better suited for children or cargo. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gave the Audi SUV high scores on all of its crashworthiness tests. It also has low projected ownership costs for the class, around $7,585 per year.

Average Price Paid: $57,478 – $95,111

Fuel Economy: 15-19 City, 21-23 Highway

Don’t overlook the 2020 Infiniti QX60

Like some of the other options, the 2020 Infiniti QX60 has room for seven. The 295-hp SUV either comes with all-wheel drive or front-wheel drive. J.D. Power gave the Infiniti a reliability score of 81 out of 100, which is in line with the competition. As far as safety goes, the NHTSA gave it a five-star safety rating. The IIHS gave the SUV high scores on necessary tests like moderate front overlap, side impact, and rear crash protection.

Average Price Paid: $39,803 – $48,852

Fuel Economy: 19-20 City, 26-27 Highway

You can overlook the 2020 Lexus GX, though

An unusual miss for the brand, the 2020 Lexus GX 460 just doesn’t have as much to offer. This Lexus has the off-road capability and high towing numbers, but it is also outdated all around. The ride isn’t exactly comfortable on-road, which is where the GX will spend a significant amount of time. It only manages to get 15 mpg in the city and 19 mpg on the highway, which is not one of its selling points. J.D. Power did give the 2020 GX a reliability score of 87 out of 100, though. Overall, there are better-equipped midsize luxury SUVs to buy used for the money.

Average Price Paid: $59,509 – $66,695

Fuel Economy: 15 City, 19 Highway

When it comes down to it, there just aren’t that many midsize luxury SUVs to buy used. If safety is a priority, compare the safety scores and safety features and try to find an example with those included. Older SUVs tend to have fewer standard safety features, but higher trim levels might have additional options.
