When you hear the name Toyota Supra, your mind is filled with images of 1000 horsepower drag racing machines and scenes from Fast and Furious. These thoughts are centered around the fourth generation, which ended US production in 1998. For over two decades, Toyota waited to release the newest version of its iconic sports car. The 2022 Toyota Supra is the latest version available for the fifth generation. But what makes the new Supra so unique? Here are three interesting facts about the 2022 Toyota Supra.

1. It shares a platform with a BMW

Toyota decided to design the newest Supra on the same platform as the new BMW Z4. When you break down the money saved, and design time, it makes sense for Toyota to team up on this project. One of the most iconic parts of the Toyota Supra is its inline six-cylinder engine. Although you can find plenty of V6 options in the Toyota fleet, there are no straight-six engines being developed.

BMW continues to develop inline six-cylinder engines. Their experience dates back to the 1930s, giving Toyota complete confidence in using a BMW powerplant for their legendary sportscar. In addition, the BMW-built B58 engine is an incredible tuning platform. Modifications began quickly, and motorsport development took off with the hype around the new Toyota Supra.

2. The hood vents, scoops, and fender vents are blocked off

The aggressive styling of the 2022 Toyota Supra is a welcomed addition to the manufacturer’s fleet. However, when you look at the production car, you’ll notice most of the vents are capped with black plastic. These vents are capped on purpose, as the drag or noise created from them does more harm than good for the car when driven as a standard road car. The chief engineer for the project, Tetsuya Tada, explained in an interview with Road&Track that the vents and scoops are designed to be functional.

Pulling the block-off plates leaves some open air, but adding aftermarket scoops makes them functional. Tada explained that racers and modifiers would have to choose which ones to pull off depending on the type of racing. Additional ducting will provide more cooling and aerodynamic function to the 2022 Toyota Supra.

3. The new Toyota Supra shares design cues from other legendary Toyotas

As we mentioned, the 2022 Toyota Supra shares a platform with the BMW Z4. However, the vehicle’s design pulls from some of Toyota’s most historic cars. For example, looking toward the roof of the vehicle, you’ll notice a double-bubble shape that is inspired by the 1967 Toyota 2000GT.

The front fascia is similar to the previous generation Supra but has sharper lines. 18-inch wheels fill out the large wheel wells, with the 3.0-liter version of the Supra receiving 19-inch wheels. A few smaller bits, such as a dual-active exhaust and an integrated rear spoiler, give the 2022 Toyota Supra an aggressive but nostalgic feel.

Is the 2022 Toyota Supra worth it?

With the base model of the 2022 Toyota Supra coming in at $43,290, it is a lot of car for the money. But, especially for enthusiasts, these cars have held their value over the years. The Supra also provides an excellent platform in motorsport, so whether you are after a great daily driver or a weekend warrior, the 2022 Supra is a great choice.
