When Consumer Reports ranked compact SUVs and wagons by cargo space, the 2022 Hyundai Tucson came in at the top of the list. The vehicles in its category have between 34 and 39 cubic feet of cargo space. In order to test the amount of cargo space, the experts at Consumer Reports used an “expanding pipe-frame box” while the second and third rows folded.

Not to mention, the 2022 Tucson has high scores on the road test, predicted reliability, and predicted owner satisfaction. This Hyundai SUV has a positive reliability history, and areas like the engine, transmission and drive system were not an issue. Forward collision warning (FCW), lane departure warning (LDW), and blind spot warning (BSW) are standard safety features. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gave this compact SUV the Top Safety Pick Plus award.

The Subaru Forester is another compact SUV slash wagon with the most cargo space

Consumer Reports picked the 2022 Subaru Forester as the best compact SUV for this year. FCW, LDW, and BSW are standard safety equipment. Rear cross-traffic warning (RCTW) is also included. The IIHS gave the Forester the Top Safety Pick Plus award and high scores on all of its tests. Subaru’s Forester came in second place for the compact SUVs with the most cargo space.

Don’t overlook Nissan Rogue and its ample cargo room

Looking at the 2022 Nissan Rogue, this compact SUV performed well on the road test. Owners report a comfortable ride and seats, plus 25 mpg overall isn’t bad. Nissan included all of the important safety features, such as FCW, LDW, BSW, and RCTW. As an IIHS Top Safety Pick Plus, it is a safe compact SUV with a lot of cargo space.

The Volvo XC60 is a wagon that has plenty of cargo space

The 2022 Volvo XC60 is part compact SUV, part wagon, but with plenty of cargo space. 34 cubic feet of cargo space, to be exact. With high road test scores and predicted reliability scores, the XC60 also has plenty of safety features to round out this SUV. FCW, LDW, BSW, and RCTW were all included standard. The IIHS gave it the Top Safety Pick Plus award along with the others on this list. Volvo’s XC60 also received a five-star safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Honda’s CR-V has a lot of safety features too

People love the 2022 Honda CR-V, and experts seem to agree. Coming in fourth overall on the list of compact SUVs, the CR-V also has a long reliability history to bring to the table. Owners report being satisfied with the driving experience and comfort. The CR-V has room for five but also comes well equipped for the low starting price. It also has 36 cubic feet of cargo space. FCW, LDW, and AEB are standard. The NHSTA gave it a five-star overall crash test rating, plus a Top Safety Pick award from the IIHS.

Price range: $26,800 – $37,800

These are your roomiest options if you need a lot of space but still prefer a compact SUV or wagon. Try it out before buying if you have specific cargo to fit in your new car.
