When it comes to vehicles that Americans love, pickup trucks certainly hold a special place. But, new trucks have become extremely expensive, with the average truck transaction being around $60,000. Now, I don’t know about you, but I don’t have $60k sitting around to spend on a pickup. So, these are three of the best used trucks you can find for less than $20,000.

Simply put, trucks are popular because they offer freedom and utility. Whether you are a weekend warrior or someone who actually uses a pickup for work, these vehicles are pretty versatile. Plus, they can be fun to drive.

At some point, auto manufacturers figured out that putting a hefty price tag on a truck would not stop it from selling. With the cost of new trucks, looking to the used market can help you save a pretty penny. Even if you need to adhere to a strict budget.

3. 2014 Chevy Silverado 2500

Now, not everyone needs a heavy-duty truck, but some folks do. The 2014 Silverado 2500 is not without its problems, but because it is older, most issues are known. According to RepairPal, one of the biggest inconveniences is a faulty speedometer. You also need to be sure to replace the fuel filter every 30,000 miles to keep the fuel pump from failing.

You can get this used truck with a traditional V8 engine, or you can try to track one down with the Duramax 6.6-liter Turbodiesel V8. Of course, the cost of the 2014 Silverado 2500 will vary depending on its configuration. That diesel engine does make 397 horsepower and 765 pound-foot of torque. So, if you need something that can tow, it might be the better option.

2. 2013 Ram 1500

If you are familiar with full-size trucks, you know about the Ram 1500. Next to the Ford F-150, it is often at the top of the list in terms of popularity. In 2013, this truck came with multiple engine options and could tow up to 10,450 lbs when properly equippped.

A Ram 1500 from 2013 will lack many of the amenities found in a new truck. But for the price, I can’t really see a reason to complain. Plus, there’s some charm to a pickup that feels old-school.

1. 2015 Toyota Tacoma

As a mid-size truck, a lot of folks view the Toyota Tacoma as the top dog. The 2015 model offers a V6 engine with 236 horsepower and 266 pound-foot of torque. But, the smaller four-cylinder engine will likely make for a cheaper truck.

According to Car and Driver, the 2015 Tacoma TRD Pro is a serious off-road truck. However, it is not going to fall into the price point we are discussing. You are more likely to find a Tacoma SR that falls under $20,000. And as an older pickup, be sure to check for things like rust. Toyota trucks are known to suffer from corrosion, especially the older model.
