If you’re looking for an SUV with plenty of passenger capacity that is also great on gas, you may want to skip some of the worst offenders and consider some of these three-row SUVs that are great on fuel.

The 2022 Toyota Sequoia is one of the SUVs that uses the most gas

The 2022 Toyota Sequoia is ranked number three on Consumer Reports’ list of the most expensive SUVs to fill up. That’s because the Sequoia costs $109 to fill up. It has a 26.4 gallon gas tank which gets 10 mpg in the city and 21 mpg on the highway. That means the Sequoia gets 386 miles on a full tank of gas. The price range for the Sequoia is $50,500 – $69,775.

What to buy instead: the 2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrid XLE

The 2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrid XLE is the biggest Toyota SUV with the best fuel economy. It’s ranked #5 on Consumer Reports’ list of the most fuel-efficient midsize SUVs. The Toyota Highlander Hybrid XLE gets 35 mpg overall, 27 mpg in the city, and 41 mpg on the highway. Its price starts at $35,405 and it goes up to $50,960.

The 2022 Chevy Suburban comes in second and is one of the SUVs that uses the most gas

The 2022 Chevrolet Suburban (and its cousin, the 2022 GMC Yukon XL) are the second most expensive vehicles to fill up right now. It costs $115 to get the Suburban to full. The Suburban tank is 28 gallons. It gets 448 miles on a full tank of gas thanks to its 11 mpg in the city and 22 mpg on the highway.

The 2022 Chevy Suburban starts at $52,400. There are a whole variety of 2022 Chevrolet Suburban trim levels to choose from, and packages to add on. 

What to buy instead: the 2022 Hyundai Palisade

The 2022 Hyundai Palisade is a super-safe three-row SUV that may not be quite as large as the Suburban but offers more luxury touches. It’s a tradeoff you may be willing to deal with for the added fuel economy. The 2022 Hyundai Palisade gets 21 mpg overall, with 15 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway. Its price range is between $33,600 – $48,990.

The 2022 Ford Expedition is the most expensive SUV to fill up

The 2022 Ford Expedition costs the most to fill up in April of 2022. It’s also one of the SUVs that uses the most gas, though not as much as the Sequoia. You’ll spend $117 to fill an Expedition right now, thanks to the Expedition’s 28.3-gallon tank. The Ford Expedition gets 453 miles on a full tank with a range of 11 mpg in the city and 23 mpg on the highway, according to Consumer Reports. The Expedition price range is somewhere between $51,110 to $82,815, depending on which trim level you get.

What to buy instead: the 2022 Ford Explorer

The 2022 Ford Explorer is ranked #21 on Consumer Reports’ list of the most fuel-efficient 2022 SUVs. It’s so comparable to the Expedition that you might be satisfied with it despite its smaller stature. The 2022 Explorer gets 21 mpg overall, with 14 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway. Its price range is between $33,745 – $55,995. 

The three most expensive SUVs to fill up have a lot going for them, but it still might be worth skipping them and looking at one of their more fuel-efficient alternatives instead. If you want to avoid the SUVs that use the most gas, you have plenty of great options.
