Electric SUVs may not use gas-powered engines, but there’s still a metric to measure the fuel economy of electric vehicles. The Environmental Protection Agency uses MPGe or miles per gallon equivalent, to measure an EV’s fuel efficiency. Here are the three 2022 electric SUVs with the best fuel efficiency.

The Tesla Model Y is incredibly efficient

According to a list compiled by InsideEVs, the Tesla Model Y has an MPGe rating of a whopping 129 miles. This makes it the most efficient electric SUV in the industry.

The Tesla Model Y once dominated the electric SUV segment. Now, there are much more affordable electric SUVs available that are capable enough for the average driver. Still, the Model Y is different from any other electric SUV because of its incredible driving range and Tesla’s long list of neat standard features.

The 2022 Tesla Model Y starts at $65,990. It comes in two different trim levels: the Long Range and Performance trims. The electric SUV makes an incredible 480 horsepower. The Long Range model has 326 miles of driving range. The Performance trim has 303 miles of driving range. It can go from 0-60 in about 3.5 seconds.

The Model Y is electric luxury at its finest (when it comes to performance). Its pricing may not be attractive, but Tesla has set the standard for electric vehicles in recent years and has a large consumer and fan base.

The Hyundai Kona Electric is predictably practical

The Hyundai Kona made a huge splash in the subcompact SUV segment in recent years because of how fun it is to drive. The Kona Electric is an electrified version of the quirky little SUV with great standard features.

The 2022 Hyundai Kona Electric starts at $34,000. It comes in two trims: the SEL base model and the Limited final trim. The Limited starts at $42,500.

The Kona Electric may seem expensive for its size, but when you consider the complexity of its powertrain, it’s actually a great deal. The subcompact SUV gets 120 MPGe. It can travel for 258 miles on a full charge. The Limited final trim includes smart cruise control with stop and go, a heated steering wheel, and leather-trimmed seats.

3 Great Alternatives to the Tesla Model Y Electric SUV

The Chevrolet Bolt EUV is a subcompact SUV relative to the Chevy Bolt EV hatchback. The Chevy Bolt EV is no stranger to controversy, but General Motors has rereleased both the Bolt EV and Bolt EUV with new pricing after making necessary adjustments to the vehicles’ batteries.

The Bolt EUV starts at just $27,200. It comes in two trims: the LT base model and the Premier final trim. The Chevy Bolt EUV Premier starts at $31,700. According to InsideEVs, the Bolt EUV gets 115 MPGe. It gets 247 miles of driving range.
