Do we all have doppelgangers out in the world? That one person that looks exactly like us, even though we come from different families. In the midsize truck class, the next-generation 2024 Toyota Tacoma might be more of a doppelganger for the overseas Toyota Hilux than ever before.

The 2024 Toyota Tacoma and Hilux trucks share a platform

In North America, the Tacoma is the name we know when it comes to the midsize Toyota truck. The regulations limit the powertrains and capabilities of this midsize pickup. The Toyota Hilux doesn’t face the same limitations and is an extremely capable midsize truck sold in foreign markets.

The next generation of these two trucks, which will arrive in 2024, will share a platform. Nearly everything Toyota builds rides on some version of the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA). For these two trucks, that is the TNGA-F platform, but the similarities between these two trucks don’t end there.

Will the engine lineup be revised for both midsize Toyota trucks?

Not only will the 2024 Toyota Tacoma share a platform with the Hilux, but this platform will be used for the new Tundra and Sequoia models. The midsize trucks have the same mounting points as the larger vehicles. This makes it possible for these smaller pickups to receive the V6 hybrid engine from the Tundra.

The Toyota Hilux is a rugged off-road truck sold in foreign markets. The Hilux doesn’t include a dedicated off-road trim level. Could the Hilux adopt the TRD Pro trim from the Tacoma? This is certainly possible with these two trucks sharing many features and qualities.

When the electric versions of the Toyota midsize trucks arrive, we expect both the Hilux and Tacoma to use the same two-motor setup.

Will the 2024 Toyota Tacoma and Hilux trucks receive upgraded electronics?

When the next generation of these midsize trucks arrives, the latest infotainment and connectivity features should be part of the package. Both trucks currently feature old systems that are aging less gracefully than a month-old forgotten carton of milk.

We expect to see larger infotainment systems, which could include the 14-inch touchscreen already present in the latest Tundra and Sequoia. In addition to larger infotainment screens, we should see:

  • An all-digital instrument cluster
  • Surround-view camera system
  • Upgraded versions of the Toyota Safety Sense system

Do these changes make the Tacoma and Hilux the same midsize trucks for every market?

It’s possible there won’t be many differences between the domestic 2024 Toyota Tacoma and foreign Hilux trucks once the new generation arrives. Of course, the differences in regulations in various markets could have an impact on the powertrains offered, which might give the Hilux a little more leeway.

With both versions of the Toyota midsize trucks sharing a platform, equipment, and adopting qualities from larger vehicles, the new generation of these Toyota trucks should bring more of what we want. If Toyota adds the Tacoma EV model to the lineup, this truck will have more options than ever before. That’s saying something considering this pickup already has nearly 30 different configurations.
