The crossover SUV world has some exciting changes with redesigns for the 2024 Subaru Crosstrek and the 2023 Honda CR-V. While there’s much to like about both models, the 2024 Subaru Crosstrek has one huge advantage over the 2023 Honda CR-V: off-road capabilities, especially with the new Wilderness trim.

Crossover SUVs that can head off the beaten path are increasingly popular — as drivers desire some rugged adventures out in nature. The redesigned 2024 Subaru Crosstrek meets this demand with its off-road capabilities.

There are multiple factors that make the Crosstrek better for off-road use than the 2023 Honda CR-V. For one, the Crosstrek’s Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive is more effective than the AWD system in the CR-V for driving over rough terrain, such as sand, gravel, sand, rocks, mud, and other uneven surfaces.

Part of the effectiveness of the Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive is due to the ability to detect wheel slippage before it occurs. Also, while AWD is standard for all Crosstrek models, it’s optional for the CR-V, so one has to pay extra. Additionally, for even greater traction, the Subaru crossover SUV has a selectable X-Mode feature.

Furthermore, the Crosstrek has higher ground clearance (up to 9.3 vs. 8.2 inches) than the CR-V. The higher ground clearance enables the crossover SUV to more safely and effectively drive over obstacles.

Unlike the 2023 CR-V, the 2024 Crosstrek has an off-road model: Wilderness trim

Another factor is that, unlike the 2023 Honda CR-V, the 2024 Subaru Crosstrek has an off-road model with the new Wilderness trim. The Crosstrek Wilderness trim is ready for outdoor adventures with various feature upgrades and enhancements. This includes elevated ground clearance, as well as increased approach and departure angles.

Also, the Crosstrek Wilderness has a dual-function X-Mode with settings for a wider range of conditions. Other off-road enhancements include a metal front skid plate, larger wheel arch cladding, a ladder-type roof rack system, and longer shock absorbers and coil springs.

Even for crossover SUV drivers that limit their excursions to on-road travel, the off-road prowess of the Crosstrek has other benefits. This includes travel in adverse weather conditions, such as snowy, rainy, and icy roads. The off-road capabilities are also helpful for driving on poor-quality roads, such as ones with potholes and cracks.

Other strengths of the Subaru Crosstrek over the Honda CR-V

The 2024 Crosstrek has some other strengths over the 2023 CR-V. This includes towing. The Crosstrek can tow up to 3,500 pounds, compared to 1,500 pounds for the CR-V. Also, with its smaller size, lower weight, and tighter turning circle than the CR-V, the Subaru crossover SUV is more maneuverable.

Additionally, the 2024 Crosstrek is cheaper. It has a starting price of $24,995 MSRP, while the 2023 CR-V starts at $28,410 MSRP. Plus, with its many standard features, the Crosstrek provides greater value.

With its better off-road capabilities and the new Wilderness trim, the 2024 Subaru Crosstrek has a huge advantage over the 2023 Honda CR-V. For those choosing between the two redesigned crossover SUVs, the off-road capabilities are an element to consider.
