The sub-$20,000 economy car market is a dwindling arena. With the departure of the adorable little Kia Rio in 2023, car shoppers have two standout options. The first is the 2024 Mitsubishi Mirage G4, the brand’s cheapest car available as a G4 sedan or hatchback. On the other hand, the 2024 Nissan Versa undercuts the Mirage’s price while offering more power, a comparable price, and a more joyful drive.

Despite similar price points, the 2024 Nissan Versa is more powerful, more affordable, and more engaging to drive than the Mitsubishi Mirage G4

The 2024 Mitsubishi Mirage G4 isn’t long for the budget-friendly compact car market. The Kia Rio rode off in 2023, and Mitsubishi’s competitor for the now-discontinued Rio isn’t far behind. That leaves the 2024 Nissan Versa S as the most affordable car in the U.S. market.

Still, despite the vehicles being a couple of the last wallet-friendly holdouts, they’re not actually all that similar. The Versa is cheaper, more powerful, and more joyful to drive. On the other hand, the Mitsubishi Mirage G4 produces just 78 horsepower from its 1.2L inline-three cylinder engine. 78 horsepower. That makes it the most anemic vehicle on the market. On the plus side, the Mirage G4 returns higher average fuel economy figures than the more potent Versa.

Nissan quotes a $16,290 MSRP for the entry-level Versa S. However, by the time you meet your Versa at a dealership, you’re looking at around $17,820. The same goes for the Mirage G4. Expect to spend around $19,115 on the diminutive Japanese sedan in its base-model trim.

However, the compact Mitsubishi does have an ace up its sleeve. With a five-year, 60,000-mile basic warranty, the Mirage G4 offers more peace of mind than the Versa’s three-year, 36,000-mile coverage.
