Toyota has been working hard to reinvent some of its nameplates and reinvigorate its portfolio. Part of this process is the introduction of several hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrain systems for its vehicles. Toyota isn’t quite ready for a fully-electric lineup yet, but most of its vehicles are offered with hybrid powertrain options.

Its most popular nameplate, the Toyota RAV4, is offered as a hybrid. There’s also a plug-in hybrid version of the RAV4, the Toyota RAV4 Prime.

Toyota has breathed new life into the Tundra pickup truck by completely redesigning it for 2022. The Sequoia got a similar redesign for the 2023 model year. The Sequoia is now a standard hybrid vehicle like the Toyota Sienna minivan. The big question on everyone’s mind is, does the Sequoia get good gas mileage now that it’s a standard hybrid?

The 2023 Toyota Sequoia achieves 21 miles per gallon in the city and 24 miles per gallon on the highway. That’s a huge upgrade from the 2022 Toyota Sequoia’s 13 miles per gallon in the city and 17 miles per gallon on the highway. The new Sequoia gets at least 7 more miles per gallon combined or about 99 more miles of driving range per full tank than the previous model year (based on average mpg and fuel tank capacity). The 2023 Toyota Sequoia is no fuel sipper, but it’s a huge improvement.

The Sequoia is also much more expensive than the Highlander. Both models seat eight, but the larger Sequoia offers much more third-row legroom. The Sequoia is the better choice for buyers that need to regularly seat seven passengers. The Highlander is ideal for smaller families.

Will the 2023 Sequoia have a V8?
