The Toyota Camry is almost always a solid buy—except for a handful of model years—so you should be in good shape, whichever model you choose. However, if you’re a fan of “new is always better,” the 2023 Toyota Camry is shiny and new (enough) and should be available in the fall. 2023 Camry vs. 2022 Camry: differences and similarities
Where they’re similar: According to Toyota, the new 2023 Camry should be nearly identical to the 2022 model. This popular midsize sedan didn’t see any improvements or changes to the exterior or interior as a whole. Camry trim levels, features, hybrid options, engine options, etc., all seem to roll over to the new model year.
Where they’re different: Unfortunately, there’s not much separating these two cars other than a moody new Nightshade Edition color and, most likely, price. The 2023 Camry is likely to cost more than the 2022 model, though Toyota hasn’t yet released specific pricing.
The 2022 Toyota Camry is available right now
The best-selling 2022 Camry isn’t the newest model available, but it is available. Since Toyota just announced the new 2023 model in mid-May, we estimate that the 2023 Camry won’t go on sale in dealerships until September or later.
If you’re ready to buy right now and don’t have your heart set on a Toyota Camry SE Nightshade in Reservoir Blue, the 2022 Camry could be a great choice.
The Camry’s powertrain stays the same for 2023 vs. 2022
The Toyota Camry is one of the last affordable cars with a V6 engine, and you can enjoy that power in either the 2022 or 2023 model. Both eighth-generation Camry cars offer a choice of three powertrains:
- 202-horsepower 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine
- 301-horsepower 3.5-liter V6 engine
- 52-MPGe-combined hybrid powertrain
However, while the overall options are the same, it’s doubtful that nothing at all has changed. There are likely some minor tweaks and improvements that helped the powertrain that weren’t newsworthy enough to share. The new 2023 Camry sedan, with the same engines as the 2022 model, could be worth waiting for.
2023 Camry vs. 2022 Camry: Buy now, or buy later?
The Toyota Camry has a solid reputation for being one of the most reliable sedans. So, whichever new midsize car you choose, you’ll get a well-built and durable sedan that’ll get you where you need to go. The 2023 and 2022 Camrys are both excellent choices.
But what if you didn’t buy either? Plot twist.
There’s a good chance that Toyota will be completely redesigning the Camry for 2024 from tip to tail. There have been a few hints that the company is anticipating something big for the sedan’s 40th birthday. An all-new 2024 Camry would likely bring a brand-new look and style and possibly more potent or fuel-efficient engine options.
If you can’t wait for a new car, the 2022 Camry is probably the better choice right now. But if you’re willing to be patient, or you want to lease a Camry for a few years, I have a good feeling about 2024.
