Sedans have dwindled in popularity in recent years. However, Toyota still keeps the torch lit with its successful sedan lineup. This includes the Camry and the Crown midsize sedans. The Crown is making big waves with its all-new design — as it returns to America after a lengthy hiatus. However, the 2023 Toyota Camry has one huge benefit over the 2023 Toyota Crown: higher gas mileage.

A major cost of vehicle ownership is gasoline. While gas isn’t as expensive as it was in 2022, it can still put a sizable dent in your budget if you drive an inefficient vehicle. However, the 2023 Toyota Camry makes trips to the fuel pump a more affordable endeavor with its high fuel economy — especially for the hybrid version.

The Camry Hybrid gets a fuel-sipping estimated gas mileage of up to 52 combined mpg. While the 2023 Toyota Crown comes equipped with a hybrid powertrain for all trim levels, it doesn’t match the efficiency of the Camry. The most efficient Crown model features the Hybrid Max setup, which gets up to 41 combined mpg — 11 mpg less than the Camry Hybrid.

As far as the fully gas-powered version of the Camry, it gets an estimated fuel economy of up to 32 combined mpg. It tops the basic hybrid setup in the Crown, which gets up to 30 combined mpg.

Another advantage of the higher fuel economy is convenience. With lower fuel consumption, the Camry requires fewer stops at gas stations compared to the Crown.

In addition to the better gas mileage lowering the cost of ownership, the 2023 Toyota Camry is an affordable choice for the midsize sedan segment with its relatively low starting price. In times of high inflation and record-high prices for new cars, it continues to be a budget-friendly option.

The starting price of the Camry ranges from $26,220 MSRP for the LE trim up to $36,645 MSRP for the XSE V6 trim. Compared to the Crown, the Camry is cheaper. The starting price of the Crown ranges from $39,950 MSRP for the XLE trim up to $52,350 MSRP for the Platinum trim. Also, when you factor in its many standard features, the Camry provides excellent value.

Other ways the Toyota Camry is better than the Crown

There are some other ways that the 2023 Camry is better than the 2023 Crown. This includes superior driving dynamics. With its slightly lower weight and size, it provides greater maneuverability. With its better maneuverability, the Camry can more fluidly drive through traffic, navigate curves and corners, back up, and park.

The most fun-to-drive Camry model is the Camry TRD, which has sports car-like driving dynamics. In comparison, the Crown is more geared for ride comfort than driving excitement.

Another strong point of the Camry is reliability. It’s one of the most reliable midsize sedans available. While the next-generation Crown might turn out to be reliable — as an all-new model, it’s relatively untested, so there’s no guarantee.

The higher fuel economy of the 2023 Toyota Camry, especially for the hybrid model, is a huge benefit that it has over the 2023 Toyota Crown. While the higher fuel economy doesn’t mean that the Camry is a better overall midsize sedan, it’s an important thing to consider.
