The 2023 Lexus IS Is No Match for These 2 Luxury Cars, Says Consumer Reports

The luxury sedan market is full of contenders. With fifteen models to choose from, a few stand out. The 2023 Lexus IS is usually a top choice for the luxury sedan market, but heavy hitters like BMW and Audi have come back on top. Lexus provides a great price point and is still up there on the list. However, according to Consumer Reports, it simply can’t compete with the Audi A4 and the BMW 3 series.

The 2023 Lexus IS provides a luxury sedan experience at a price point everyone can agree on. Unfortunately, the Lexus IS doesn’t quite excel at fuel efficiency. Ratings for the Lexus IS 300 come in at 21 miles per gallon city and 31 mpg highway. The numbers for the turbo four-cylinder engine aren’t the worst in its class, but they fall short. As for the other engines, the V6 option is rated at 20 mpg city and 28 mpg highway. So it is no surprise that the V8 is the worst, at 17 mpg city and 25 mpg highway.

As for its competition, the 2023 Audi A4 squeaks out a rating of 24 mpg city and 33 highway. The A4s upgraded but similar turbo four-cylinder engine loses just one mpg highway over the lower power model. When looking at the BMW, the 2023 BMW 330i is rated at 25 mpg city and 34 mpg highway. Marginally better than the A4, the BMW 330i is the best choice of all three in terms of fuel efficiency.

Like most cars, the 2023 Lexus IS seats up to five passengers. Although it has ample room for the occupants, it needs more in the cargo area. The Lexus IS has a cargo space of just 10.8 cubic feet. Due to a small trunk and no folding rear seats, the Lexus suffers for space outside of seating. Comparing this to the competition, the 2023 Audi A4 has a cargo space of 12 cubic feet. It may not seem like much of a jump, but it makes all the difference for stowing groceries and luggage. Again, beating out the others is the 2023 BMW 330i. The 330i has a cargo space of 13.2 feet with the seats up and an astonishing 17 cubic feet with the seats down.

How Much Is a Fully Loaded 2023 Lexus IS?

Aside from the 2023 Lexus IS 500 F Sport, the other models need to catch up in terms of excitement. Car and Driver explain that the IS300 is underpowered compared to its rivals. The lack of power from the vehicle is not saved by the handling either, putting it low on the list. As for the IS500 F Sport, its powerful V8 makes it exciting, and the dynamic suspension keeps it glued to the road. Unfortunately for the Lexus, it pales in comparison to the Audi and BMW in its class.

The 2023 Audi A4 moves with authority due to its turbo four-cylinder. Due to its standard all-wheel-drive and tuned suspension, it has a commanding grip on the road. For a luxury sedan, it is surprisingly sporty through every trim level. Even so, the Audi falls short compared to the 2023 BMW 330i. Consumer Reports describes the BMW as sharp handling, comfortable, and having a responsive drivetrain. Combining these elements into the stylish look of the 3 series makes it sit high on the list of luxury sedans.

Is the 2023 Lexus IS the right car for you?

Overall, the Lexus IS is still a great car for the price. However, the 2023 BMW 3 series is a much better deal. Consumer Reports gives a great comparison between the three cars. Given that it is the most fuel-efficient, spacious, and best driving experience of all three options, you won’t feel bad spending a little extra over the Lexus or the Audi. If the BMW isn’t quite your style, we would go for the Audi A4 instead of the Lexus. It may not have the aggressive styling of the Lexus, but it is a more well-rounded package.
