The Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4 have long competed against each other. But for 2023, it seems like the CR-V might be the better option if you want a new SUV. The 2023 Honda CR-V marks the sixth generation of this vehicle, while the RAV4 is still in its fifth. So, how does the Honda SUV compare to the Toyota option?

2023 Honda CR-V vs. 2023 Toyota RAV4

The 2023 CR-V and 2023 RAV4 are two fairly similar vehicles. As SUVs, you can opt for a traditional gas engine or purchase a hybrid model. The Honda CR-V is notably larger than the RAV4, and that might make it a better pick for some. It offers more passenger space than the Toyota.

Cargo space is another story. With the seats up, the 2023 Toyota RAV4 does have slightly more cargo capacity. But with the seats down, the cargo space of the 2023 CR-V increases to 76.5 cubic feet. So if you want ample cargo space from your SUV, it is probably best to opt for the Honda over the Toyota.

What engines do these SUVs have?

In terms of base engine, the Toyota RAV4 has an edge over the CR-V. Its 2.5-liter engine makes 203 horsepower and 184 pound-foot of torque. The base engine of the Honda is a 1.5-liter turbo engine which generates 190 hp and 179 lb-ft of torque.

It is worth noting that both of these SUVs do offer a hybrid option. Although only the 2023 Toyota RAV4 features a plug-in hybrid variant. Much like the traditional combustion engine, the hybrid powerplant of the RAV4 does make more power. So if you are concerned about power output, you may want to opt for the 2023 RAV4.

Is the 2023 Honda CR-V safer than the Toyota RAV4?

When it comes to buying an SUV, safety is an important factor. Both the RAV4 and the CR-V offer an ample number of standard and available safety tech. Every 2023 Honda CR-V comes standard with hill descent control and a driving mode to handle snow. And that is something that you will have to pay extra for on the Toyota.

According to MotorTrend, the Toyota RAV4 earned the IIHS Top Safety Pick and an NHTSA five-star score. It is unclear if the Honda CR-V will be able to achieve something similar. Although in the past, it has been rated high in terms of safety.

Should you pick the CR-V or RAV4?

If you look on paper, the 2023 RAV4 does bring a lot to the table. But in the past, the Honda CR-V has offered a solid driving experience, and that could help make up for some of its shortcomings.

The best way to determine which SUV is correct for you is by test driving both options. That way, you can tell which will fit your lifestyle and personal preference. At the end of the day, that might be easier said than done. Dealerships are still having problems getting new vehicles on their lot.
