The 2023 Ford Ranger vs. the 2022 Ford Maverick
We got to see the 2023 Ford Ranger model for global markets, but it’s only a preview of the upcoming American model. It’s a tough act to follow because the 2022 Ford Maverick is already performing extremely well in the spotlight.
But the Ford Maverick Hybrid is already almost sold out, and the new Ford Ranger won’t arrive until the 2023 model year. Both trucks may come with a wait, so which option is worth waiting for?
Is the Ranger better than the Maverick?
The Ford Maverick has an attractive MSRP of $19,995. That’s hard to beat. The 2022 Ranger has an MSRP of $25,070, which is also nice. Official pricing for the 2023 Ford Ranger hasn’t been released yet, but it could increase by a few thousand dollars. We hope it says under $30,000.
With the Maverick, you get a standard 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that is paired with an electric motor to generate 191 hp and 162 hp. You can upgrade to the 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine for 250 hp and 277 lb-ft of torque.
The Ranger comes with the same 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine from its previous generation. It pumps out 270 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque. However, the Ranger Raptor truck may have a similar version of the twin-turbo 2.7-liter V6 that the Bronco has.
When properly equipped, the Maverick can tow up to 4,000 lbs. Only the gasoline-powered engine can be paired with all-wheel drive and the towing package. The Ranger is expected to maintain its 7,500 lbs towing capacity.
The Maverick Hybrid gets an EPA-estimated 42 mpg in the city and up to 33 mpg on the highway. The 2022 Ranger receives an EPA-estimated 21 mpg in the city and up to 26 mpg on the highway. Numbers for the 2023 model may change, and a hybrid powertrain could be added to the mix.
Does the Ranger or Maverick have better features?
The 2023 Ford Ranger has a wheelbase that’s been expanded by 2.0 inches, and the track is also 2.0 inches wider. The rest of its suspension is similar to the previous generation’s, but it’s been enhanced.
For example, the rear dampers are now placed outside of the frame rails. This should improve its ride quality. The 2022 Ford Maverick has been noted by critics for having a bit of a rough ride over bumps.
The Ranger comes with a 10.1-inch touchscreen, but you can upgrade to a 12.0-inch unit. The Maverick comes with an 8.0-inch unit. Both trucks offer wireless phone charging and innovative storage solutions.
The Ranger added cargo solutions under the rear seats and in the doors. Plus, the Ranger has a larger cab, so it provides more passenger and cargo space.
Both trucks are great options to consider, but the Maverick is better on fuel and easier to maneuver in tight areas. The Ford Ranger can tow more and has more space. But we’re still waiting to learn more about it. If you need more capability, go with the Ranger.
