2023 Maverick specs: Engine options, gas mileage, and towing

Buyers of the new 2023 Ford Maverick have a choice of two engine options. The standard powertrain is a hybrid, which combines a 2.5-liter engine with an electric motor. Mated to a continuously variable transmission, it generates a total system output of 191 horsepower and 155 lb-ft of torque. 

Pickup truck buyers that seek more power can opt for the available turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. Paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, it doles out 250 horsepower and 277 lb-ft of torque. Maverick models with the turbo engine offer either a front-wheel drive or an available all-wheel drive system, but the hybrid model only comes with front-wheel drive.

On the efficiency front, the Maverick Hybrid gets an estimated gas mileage of up to 42 city/33 highway mpg, while the gas-powered Maverick gets a fuel economy of up to 23 city/30 highway mpg. Also, when properly equipped, the Maverick can tow up to 4,000 pounds. 

Features in the 2023 Maverick Tremor off-road package

The 2023 Ford Maverick is a primarily a carryover model with no major changes expected for the new model year. However, the 2023 Maverick offers a new Tremor package with enhanced off-road capabilties. Available with the Maverick XLT or Lariat, the Tremor package costs an extra $2,995 on top of the price of these trims.

Features and upgrades in the Maverick Tremor package include a new all-wheel drive system, a twin-clutch rear-drive locking differential, a one-inch lift, and a trail control feature.

What are the pickup truck competitors of the Ford Maverick?

The Ford Maverick only has one competitor in the compact pickup truck segment: the Hyundai Santa Cruz. However, the Maverick also competes with midsize trucks, including the Toyota Tacoma, Honda Ridgeline, Chevy Colorado, Jeep Gladiator, GMC Canyon, and Nissan Frontier.

Additionally, for warranty coverage, the 2023 Maverick has a 3-year/36,000-mile basic warranty and a 5-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty.
