Initially, it was rumored that the 2023 Explorer would have major updates, especially after the unveiling of a redesigned Explorer in China. However, the redesigned version of the Explorer likely won’t be available until the 2024 model year in the United States.

One of the biggest strengths of the 2023 Explorer is the lineup of powerful engine options. The base-level 2.3-liter EcoBoost I-4 engine generates 300 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque, while the available 3.0-liter EcoBoost V-6 engine doles out 400 horsepower and 415 lb-ft of torque.

Additionally, the Explorer offers a 3.3-liter V-6 hybrid powertrain, which produces 318 horsepower and 322 lb-ft of torque. On the efficiency front, the Explorer has an estimated gas mileage of up to 27 city/28 highway mpg for the hybrid model and 21 city/28 highway mpg for the fully gas-powered model.

When properly equipped, the Explorer can tow up to 5,600 pounds. Also, the Explorer offers a choice of either a rear-wheel drive system or a traction-enhancing four-wheel drive system. Additionally, for wilderness adventures, there’s the off-road-focused Timberline trim.
