Yes, the 2023 Chevy Silverado Duramax Diesel consumes oil, but this shouldn’t be a concern. As Pickup Truck Talk explains, the Silverado Durmax has a normal oil consumption. But this is sparking debates. 

Some owners are concerned about oil consumption. The idea that the engine is supposed to use oil and that the amount of oil used is part of the engine’s normal operation is leading to frustration. 

They feel like engines shouldn’t use any oil, and if they do, then it could be a reliability issue or an engineering failure. However, General Motors explained that normal oil consumption is a thing, and it appears in two ways. 

What is the Silverado Durmax’s normal oil consumption? 

The first part of normal oil consumption for the 2023 Chevy Silverado Duramax Diesel starts in the factory. The LZo Duramax engine receives an extra quart of oil during the production process. 

Sean Syzmkowski, senior manager of Chevrolet Trucks Communications, explained that the 2023 LZo-powered vehicles are shipped with an extra quart of oil in the crankcase. The extra oil is only required for the first factory fill. 

Only the standard amount of oil is used during the first oil change. The #21-NA-272 technical service bulletin was provided to dealerships in case owners raised concerns. Plus, this applies to the LM2 Duramax diesel and the LZo Duramax. 

The bulletin shares the accepted rate of oil consumption for engines used in vehicles referenced is 0.946 (one quart) in 1,600 km (1,000 miles). This rate doesn’t apply to vehicles driven in an aggressive manner, at high RPM, at high speeds, or while hauling. 

Driving in those conditions will consume more oil. The rate only applies to personal use vehicles that are under warranty, driven in a non-aggressive manner, at legal speeds, and while unloaded. 

Using oil isn’t a bad thing! It’s an important part of keeping your truck properly maintained, especially for towing and hauling.

The 2023 Chevy Silverado 3.0-liter inline-six Duramax diesel engine got more power. It cranks out 305 hp and 495 lb-ft of torque, which is up from 277 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque. 

New components such as new steel pistons with a revised combustion bowl, a retuned turbo compressor, new fuel injectors, and improved temperature control features are responsible for these improvements. 

The Duramax engine gets an EPA-estimated 24 mpg in the city and up to 29 mpg on the highway. It’s paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission. Also, it can tow up to 13,300 lbs and carry a payload of up to 1,930 lbs. 

You can add an aftermarket oil pan to make things easier. Some hold an additional two quarts of oil, which can help stabilize consumption by having more oil in the crankcase. So, burning oil isn’t a concern for the Silverado unless it’s at an excessive rate.
