When it was introduced in 1969 as the Chevy K5 Blazer, the Blazer was known for its off-road capability and rugged looks as a full-size SUV. Even the mid-size Chevy S-10 Blazer could handle some rugged terrain and was built until 2005. In 2019, Chevy revised the Blazer nameplate, but not in the way that many enthusiasts wanted. And that is because the Blazer is now just one more crossover in a crowded segment. But, can it handle off-road situations?

The 2023 Chevy Blazer is not the SUV we remember

As more and more manufacturers are adding rugged, off-road-inspired SUVs, Chevy has gone the opposite way. The 2023 Blazer features sleek design and looks more at home on the road than it does on the trail. Two engines are available. A standard 2.0-liter turbo with 228 horsepower and 258 pound-foot of torque. For added power, an available 3.6-liter V6 makes 308 hp and 270 lb-ft of torque.

Available all-wheel drive will add to the capability of this crossover. And there is an available off-road mode. But the new Blazer lacks the features needed for serious off-roading. But then again, buyers shopping for this kind of vehicle are looking for comfort. Not necessarily Bilstein shocks and locking differentials.

Can the 2023 Chevy Blazer go off-road?

While the new Blazer can come equipped with AWD, heavy off-roading will not be ideal in this vehicle. The AWD system will be ideal for things like inclement weather or handling dirt roads. With the simple turn of the dial, drive modes can be adjusted to optimize the drive for the current conditions.

What’s new for the 2023 Chevy Blazer?

Although the Chevy Blazer won’t be as capable as something like a 4Runner, it has received notable updates for 2023. These include a facelift which makes this two-row SUV look more distinct.

Standard tech will now include a new 10.0-inch touchscreen along with a wireless charging pad, according to Car and Driver. New paint options are also available, allowing drivers to get a vehicle that is reflective of them.

What does the Chevy Blazer compete with?

The Chevy Blazer competes with a range of different models. These include the Ford Edge, Honda Passport, Hyundai Santa Fe, and Nissan Murano. Some of these are slightly cheaper than the Blazer, and the Santa Fe can be had with a hybrid powertrain.

If you are shopping for a two-row SUV that has some capability, the Chevy Blazer makes for an ideal choice. It may not live up to Blazers of the past, but that doesn’t stop it from being a practical and stylish vehicle. Enthusiasts just may prefer that Chevy had used a different name for this vehicle. Something that did not have a rich heritage of off-road performance and 4×4 capability.

The new Blazer is available in multiple trim levels and does feature modern safety equipment. And its interior is a comfortable place to be. The 2023 Chevy Blazer is expected to go on-sale sometime summer of 2022.
