The 2022 Toyota Tundra is the comeback king. The Tundra has gone for over a decade without a redesign. Now that the Japanese automaker has finally refreshed the full-size truck, it’s gaining a lot of attention. The latest Tundra surprisingly made it into the top 3 of a list of best full-size pickup trucks for 2022, compiled by U.S. News & World Report.

The Toyota Tundra is one of the best new full-size pickup trucks of 2022

Japanese automaker Toyota has successfully addressed most issues that consumers had with prior Tundra models. Previous Tundra models were powerful, but they had plenty of drawbacks. Older model years are gas guzzlers that lack the refinement other trucks in its segment provided.

Year after year, the Tundra has been underwhelming…until now. Expectations were high for the 2022 Toyota Tundra, but who would have thought it would be mentioned in the same breath as industry giants like the Ram 1500 or Ford F-150? According to U.S. News & World Report, the 2022 Toyota Tundra is the third-best new full-size pickup truck for consumers in 2022.

While this may seem obvious for those familiar with the new Tundra, this news is shocking to Tundra fans who have been continuously disappointed by the pickup’s lack of improvement over the years. The Tundra had trouble competing for fifth or sixth place in rankings in prior years, let alone third place.

The fact that the Tundra is held in such high regard for 2022 is a huge change for the brand and the full-size pickup. Here’s why U.S. News & World Report, as well as other digital publications, consider the new Tundra to be among the best new trucks of 2022.

The 2022 Toyota Tundra is classier, more fuel-efficient, and more powerful than ever before

The 2022 Toyota Tundra starts at $35,950. It achieves up to 18 miles per gallon in the city and 24 miles per gallon on the highway. The full-size pickup comes standard with a 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 engine that makes a whopping 389 horsepower. Toyota has said goodbye to the Tundra’s typical V8 engine, but that doesn’t mean the new model is any less powerful.

The new Tundra’s fuel economy is a huge improvement from the 2021 model year’s measly 15 miles per gallon combined. The new model year will also be the first Tundra to offer a hybrid option. The 2022 Toyota Tundra Hybrid uses an i-FORCE MAX powertrain with the help of electric motors to make an astounding 437 horsepower.

Despite the 2022 Toyota Tundra’s many improvements, it still isn’t the best full-size truck on the market. Toyota has made amazing strides with the new truck, and the latest Tundra should be acknowledged, but that doesn’t mean it should be your first choice when looking for a new truck.

The Ram 1500 and Ford F-150 have dominated their segment for years. The 2022 Ram 1500 is U.S. News & World Reports’ pick for the best new truck of 2022 because of its refined cabin, smooth ride quality, and great standard features. The 2022 Ram 1500 starts at $35,200, a few hundred dollars less than the new Tundra.

If you are a Tundra fan who longs to see how the Japanese automaker has improved on its full-size truck, the Tundra is sure to leave you grinning from ear to ear. If you’re looking for the best full-size truck in 2022, the Tundra may still need a few years to ascend to the top.
