For the most part, you’ll find car experts disagree on many things. Usually, if multiple critics share an opinion, it’s easier to regard it as a fact. “The 2022 Toyota Tacoma interior is outdated” is an opinion most share. Many experts from around the internet agree that the popular pickup truck could use a facelift.

Experts are tired of the Toyota Tacoma interior

Overall, the 2022 Toyota Tacoma is showing its age. Last redesigned in 2016, the popular midsize truck has fallen behind many other models. Most experts don’t recommend buying it, though it remains very popular. In Consumer Reports‘ road test report, the reviewer’s quote about the Tacoma’s interior sums it up nicely:

“For all of Toyota’s claims that the 2016 redesign brought an all-new truck, key features seem as though Toyota slept through the past decade’s advances in truck technology and interior design.”

Whether a full-size or midsize truck, modern models have quiet cabins, a smooth ride, and an upscale interior. Toyota’s smaller pickup offering fails to meet any of those expectations. According to CR, that’s why it’s far behind in the rankings. The Honda Ridgeline has a superior interior and outranks Toyota’s offering despite a higher starting price.

Critics agree the 2022 Tacoma falls short

Outside of Consumer Reports, other publications share the same opinion. For example, Car and Driver aren’t fans of the Toyota truck’s interior. “Sticking to your roots is commendable, but it doesn’t work in favor of the Tacoma’s cabin,” CAD said. Even in higher trim levels, the Tacoma frequently uses hard plastics and minimalistic materials. Additionally, the rear seats are still much more cramped than other models of similar size.

CAD called the rear legroom inside the 2022 Toyota Tacoma “abysmal.” For a taller adult, the back seat will be uncomfortable for more than a few minutes. Next, storage space inside the cabin is as limited as the passenger space. Rivals offer cubbies, hidden storage, and more, but the Tacoma fails to provide anything. Aside from the center-console bin, there aren’t many areas to store anything without using the cargo bed. Compared to other models, this feels very outdated.

Premium infotainment is lackluster

For 2022, the Toyota Tacoma comes standard with a 7-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Amazon Alexa, and more. The base Tacoma comes with USB ports, satellite radio, and six speakers, so it’s fairly well-equipped. However, upgrading to the premium version of the infotainment system is disappointing. According to U.S. News, available optional features include an 8-inch touchscreen, navigation, wireless device charging, and a six-speaker JBL sound system.

We don’t think the upgraded features are worth the price. Firstly, a one-inch jump in the screen isn’t much at all. An 8-inch screen is usually the base version for other models, but it’s the upgraded variant in the Tacoma. Next, factory navigation is nearly irrelevant in 2022. Additionally, since Apple CarPlay/Android Auto are standard features, in-phone navigation is superior to Toyota’s factory-installed offering. Finally, wireless device charging and a JBL sound system are excellent upgrades, though we wish the premium audio system added more speakers.

Avoid the outdated 2022 Toyota Tacoma interior

Overall, experts don’t recommend the 2022 Toyota Tacoma midsize pickup truck. Unfortunately, the popular model’s interior isn’t on par with competing models. With other options like the 2022 Honda Ridgeline available, a premium in-cabin experience is available. With the upcoming Tacoma redesign, we expect a significant jump in quality. Moreover, in-cabin materials, cargo and passenger space, and an upgraded infotainment system will likely join the lineup. For now, experts agree that the 2022 Toyota Tacoma interior is outdated.
